While I don't think it is the goal of Christianity to hold mankind back, I think that Christianity often stands in the way of progress. For example, many Christians (certainly not all) are opposed to the use of embryonic stem cells, which may be able to cure many diseases. The human embryos these stem cells come from are essentially undifferentiated balls of cells, about the size of a grain of sand. But Christians give these undifferentiated, tiny blobs the same importance, and the same right to life, as sick, adult human beings with numerous friends and family members. In this sense, the religious beliefs many Christians in America hold are holding back science that could truly help countless people throughout the world.

Christianity's purpose is to uplift mankind from the errors of immoral living. In fact the word "progress" in your question needs to be properly defined. I see progress as the spiritual fulfillment of the human into the likeness of jesus. Some terrible things have been done in God's name. That is not to be held against every beleiver everywhere. This a relationship with Jesus not a religion and when the Holy spirit fills your life you cannot help but progress in every area of your life. Believers do not simply rely on preachers. They look to pastors for fine tuning their Walk. THeir are many functions of the church body... slowing "progress" is not one of them.

It seems like it. Preachers preach against everything new as soon as it comes out. They preached that the railroad was the doom of civilization when they started up in the 1830's and '40's. They preached against radio, film, television, even surfing and skateboarding, as soon as they started, too. But in each case once it was noticed that 1) the phenomenon was not going away and 2) that there was money to be made for the ministry, the churches that protested became enthusiastic users. Its almost as if society has to have an automatic brake built in to filter changes, and the function of religion is to hold changes off long enough for them to be evaluated.

I'll take your question a go a little further with it. Not only is good that Christianity slow the progress of man but it would be even better if it would change it as well. If left to man, this world would have been destroyed hundreds of times over by now.

It’s quite the opposite. In the United States, people have voted God out of the schools; the result has been a steady to a now deadly increase in violence in our schools. As God gets pushed further away from our conscience the more depraved our society becomes. We are now inundated with serial killers, drug related killings and families disintegrating.

Christianity in its true form preached progress, patience, and forgiveness for their fellow man.
The religious right preaches hatred, bigotry, racism, and social intolerance.
They are the ones whom have been seeking to turn things back--based on "morality" and "belief" issues.

Is there a place on this earth that you call progress? Middle east? - Islam - Jewish - is that progress??? Asia? Africa?....

Then how does Atheism contribute to mankind? All Atheism does is focus on something they strongly profess isn't there. How bright is that? "There is not a flying spaghetti monster in my room. I will remember that every day and tell everyone I know about it, and go on Yahoo Answers to repeat it continually"

That seems to be true. Especially when it plays a role in the government.
