He is 14 months old and has only two teeth. I have never heard of a child getting teeth this late. His first two teeth came in as soon as he turned one. The doctor said since he was 9 weeks premature, to consider him 2 months younger. So, technically he is 12 months with only two teeth. Is this normal,. or should I call a doctor or perhaps a dentist? He does brush the two teeth he has. But, he isn't getting hardly any meat in his diet because he can't chew. Does any one else have this problem?

Two things:

A good friend's daughter was 15 months old before she had ANY teeth. My friend was really concerned, but the pediatrician and the dentist weren't. They said it really isn't that unusual, and there's not much they can do about it, anyway. And my friend's daughter finally did get all her teeth, and all's well.

Second, a child can eat table foods even if he/she doesn't have teeth. Their gums are plenty strong enough to mash anything. So your son can eat meat. (Kids that young don't really "chew" their food, anyway, teeth or no.) Talk to your pediatrician if you don't believe me.

I actually have quite the opposite problem. My daughter is 4 months, 2 months adjusted and is already cutting teeth. Like the previous poster said, all children develop differently. He should probably see the dentist anyway at this point...if nothing else to ease your mind!

Don't panic... Your son is fine. My first child, had a full set of teeth by 1 year. My second, my son will be turning 1 year old on the 26th, and he only has 3 teeth. I've been worried too, but when I brought it up at his last appointment, he laughed and told me to enjoy it, because once he gets them, he won't be afraid to use them.

I am sure he is fine, but his progress will be slightly delayed while he is little. I am concerned about the meat intake. Are you substituting protien with eggs, beans or something similar? You can also take boneless skinless chicken breast, wrap it in a little foil packet, put it in a baking pan filled half way with water and bake it for about 45 minutes. It will come out very tender and then chop it up very small for him to eat. You can also cook meat all day in a crock pot and it will be very soft. Check with your pediatrician for some sources of protien for your little guy. Dont worry though, I am sure he is perfect and will do just fine.

I have a sister and a nephew who didn't get teeth until they were around a year old. They both have normal teeth now. My mom says my sister ate everything we ate, even with only a couple of teeth. Babies can "chew" food with their gums. You might be surprised what your son can eat. Just give him small pieces.

My youngest sister never got her teeth until she was about 13 months, then she never lost her baby teeth until she was 8 years old and everything was fine.

Check with dr. at regular checkup about the teething. Meat is not critical; protein is. Other protein sources: beans (mash them), nuts and seeds (grind them), yogurt, cheese, milk, eggs, tofu. However, if you are determinedly carnivorous, you could always chop the meat very very fine. You could also make meaty broths.

He DEFINITELY should have more than two teeth at his age regardless of when he was born. At 6 mos. he should at least have 2 uppers & 2 lowers. He needs to see a Dr. to see if the teeth are there & just not coming thru correctly. He'll be able to tell if they're just under his gums & they won't cut thru. Do something about it soon tho as it is surely affecting his ability to eat solid foods.

You should find him a specialist pead dentist who has experience with Premi's. My girls took forever to get their teeth but they got them.

I say see a specialist dentist as prems often have issues with teeth, from enamel issues, brittle teeth, malformed palates etc. Best to be sure all ok.

kids all develop at their own pace, and being a preemie will definaly delay some phyiscal steps. Try feeding him softer meats, like ground beef or turkey. He will get teeth soon, believe me.
