I work at our family owned gas station and it is aggrivationg to have to repeat myself everytime a custome comes in to get gas. I observe the same thing everyday:
1. Customer parks at gas pump, opens gas tank, removes gas nozzle from pump and place into gas tank,
2. customer then turns to pump and starts pressing buttons.
3. Customer comes into store and asks us to turn on the gas pump.
A."I'll stand here while it pumps and when it shuts off i'll pay you."
B. "I'll leave you my wallet."
C. "I dont know how much it will hold and i want to fill up, but i dont want to use my credit card because i want to purchase some things inside."
D. "Jut turn the pump on."
The sollution: use your card at the pump and inside ( 2 transactions), or prepay an amount (i.e.-if you are in a truck...prepay $50 or $100 and whatever amount your truck doesnt take, we will give you your change. i cannot cover everything because i am running out of letters i can type. questions? please ask!

I understand your pain... All you can do is tell them their options over and over again... That is your responsibility in the job your in. If you can't handle it find a different job. Doing anything else will decrease the number of customers coming back and that is bad business. Customer service isn't for everyone... Maybe you'd do better doing something else?

Good luck,

One reason could be that the way you are doing things is different from many other gas stations. We show up at gas station & ASSUME it is like most places & we do what we usually do.

In my case, I go to gas station, make sure engine is off, car in park, have the key out to unlock access, check the different kinds of gas to get the blend I want & make sure this is the unleaded, then I get the car filled up, then I go inside & tell them I was at whatever #, and pay the right amount. Sometimes I also buy some snacks at the same time.

Unless the signage is awful obvious, if the equipment not working right when I start trying to fill my gas, I assume this is normal situation. A lot of the equipment at a lot of gas stations is not maintained well, and is designed to be user-hostile, so it would be normal for me to be thinking I did not push the button hard enough, or some variation therof.

There are a few places I go that I know from other visits are pre-pay, so I go inside, wait in line, tell the clerk that I am at pump # whatever, and want to pay in advance, but I don't know how much gas I will need ... here is a $ 20.00 bill which should cover it ... I will be back in after the fillup to settle up, and buy some snacks.

Then when I am done, I move my car so it is parked in front of the entrance, not blocking other people, go in, get snacks, wait in line, tell the clerk that I was at pump # whatever & that I had paid in advance (because one clerk not tell the other, and even if same clerk may have forgotten me) & I am ready to settle up & also get these snacks.

Bottom line, the business practices are not consistent from gas station to gas station, and not consistent from employee to employee. Different motorists have different levels of experience with these different practices and different levels of awareness of all the crookedness that is out there, such as:
* there is a way for the gas station to change the gas prices, and some crooks have figured out how to lower that unauthorized, and after they are finished they often leave it that way & the next person to fill up with gas there not know there is stealing going on, they just think they got a bargain
* there is a way for unauthorized persons to get the credit card info out of the gasoline station equipment, which has led to many thousands of gas station customers having their credit stolen

There's a special place in heaven for people like you.
You're the bad guy because gas costs close to 2.80 a gallon.
I see this all the time. In fact, yesterday, I saw a woman pumping gas and was about to light a cigarette. I screamed " Stop! you'll kill us all." She looks at me, like, who, me???
I'm a guy who always uses a credit card. I see from the outside what you see in the inside.
Today, while gassing up the wife's car, I see a little old lady, " I have to buty some milk. Can't they make an exception? I have to in there any way."
When I think the people I work with are the dumbest people on this planet, i go buy gas, . It restores my faith in my people.

Yea people are pretty dumb, I work as a cashier and I see it all, people get fed up pretty easily too.

"can I pay $.99 and the rest on my credit card?" nope dont do that, "nevermind then I dont want it"

Then ill have the guy who buys a pack of gum, uses his debit card, and asks for $100 cash back, I tell him we dont do cash back, "oh I dont want it then"

then i;ll have someone use a credit card we dont accept, like american express, and when I say we dont accept it, they'll say "but I just used it last week!" and walk out frustrated

The best is when people get angry at something thats not our fault, like we're out of a certain item or something, and they'll start saying "im moving my business elsewhere!" over and over, just incase I didnt hear it the first time, like it offends me.

People everywhere are idiots and think the world should run the way they want it to.

what it is most people are still use to the old way of doing thing, get gas then pay ,and they don't really want to make the switch, its about the same way ever where you go to these days though, some people don't want to use a credit card at the pump though and i cant say as i blame them for that ,i for one wont use one,but we are slowly being forced to use them more whether we like it or not,its like cash isn't any good any more,i can see the gas stations point to though, it stops a lot of drive offs from happening, but its just the way it is,some people wont ever make the change, good luck.

It could be a community thing...in some communities (fewer and fewer) there still might be the old way of doing things...of course prepaying does cut down on gas thefts...thats why it's here to stay!
