Research it like you are doing now. Just remember, no matter what field you chose, you are military first. A lot of guys come in thinking that because they chose a deskjob in the Navy they won't end up in Iraq... wrong, individual augmentees are being pulled every day. Just be sure. I love it, take the good with the bad.

Joining the military is an individual thing. As long as u realize that for the next 4 years or however long u sign up for, they own you, meaning you are on call 24/7, and have to answer your phone, its okay. Some MOS's are better than others, some are mainly single soldier oriented because you deploy a lot and work long hours. For example, MP's can work 12 hrs, which is an 18 hr day with guard mount and PT, and all that crap, for days on end, it is not a 5 day a week job, but an office position could be mon-fri, 9-5 type work. It all depends on your personality and what u want to do. For single ppl, it is a great experience, can get you to see the world, and help with college money, but keep in mind, right now we are at war, and you could go to Iraq or Afghanistan, its part of your job. It's essentially what you signed up for in the first place. For someone who is married and has kids, i don't recommend it so highly, because of too many soldiers getting deployed and their spouse cheating on them, and too much time away from the family and kids can cause divorce. For a kid fresh outta high school, go for it! It is a guaranteed income, and an opportunity like no other.

The military is a great opportunity that has many great benefits (you learn a skill, money for college, travel around the world, etc.) if you choose to serve honorable for the term of your enlist. However, as a few have already stated, remember that the military is a war fighting entity and not a college funding program. The military has a primary purpose, and that purpose is to fight our nations wars. Just make sure you are prepared for that, especially with the conflicts we currently have going on. I joined the military six years ago and a month from now I will sign up for four more years. But that is me and the military is not for everybody.

I'm former military myself, a Marine, btw. There are a lot of good benefits within the military, with the GI Bill(I'm using it now, I'm basically going to school for free), retirement plans, and more. The only problem is that if you join nowadays, you will no doubt go to Iraq and Afghanistan. I've been to Iraq twice, been there, done that. The Corps treated me with so much respect and dignity, but I decided to leave the Marine Corps due to the deployments, and I wanted to go to school, but the deployments got in the way. If you do plan on joining the military, don't make your decision on other people's opinions. Listen to retired, active, or sepatrated military member's stories and maybe that might influence you in your decision.
I have a couple of stories about it, email me or IM me and I can help you out.

The military is a great option; I'm offended when people say the military is only good when it's your last option.
I've been in four years in enlisted; planning on getting out in two finishing up a degree in and coming right back in as an officer.
The military is not for everyone though, there's a lot of different reasons people join the military, if serving your country isn't in you're top three, don't join, the military doesn't need another ****-up whose just going to complain his entire enlistment.
Talk to people in the career fields you’re looking into.
Know what you're getting into; you are expected to fight you're nations battles even though you may object to its moral principals.
The sad fact is every once in a while, there will be a sad individual who will think you're responsible for all of Americas ills, they'll say awful things like you murder innocent children, ignorance at it's finest.
Watch out when you go to the recruiter, he'll try to "sell" you a job you don't want.
The military has been well worth it for me, opened up opportunities to me, is paying for college, and gave me something I can be proud of.

I think it is great if you have no where else to go, or are undecided on what you want to do with your life when your young. I think that it has some solid possibilities for a decent career. I also know that you should really think and consider all options before enlisting. I grew up in a military family and it can be hard at times. You need to know what all your getting into and seeing if that is exactly the sort of thing your into.

I think everyone should join the military. OK, I know that's not practical, and not everyone is "cut out" for the military or they don't have the physical or mental capacity to serve. But I do believe that everyone should serve in some fashion, that gives back to the community and betters our nation as a whole. Whether the military, law enforcement, civil, emergency, health, educational services. There are many ways to serve.
When you serve your community you earn your citizenship and your Rights. A lot of people have these given to them, but like a teenager whose parents give them a $50,000 vehicle for their 16th Birthday, they have no respect or value for it. And before you know it all they have is a pricey piece of junk.
When you serve you take pride & ownership of both your Rights & your Citizenship.

don't get in. i dont i repeat don't support the military. i think the military is stupid. it just kills people for no reason. poor kids r dieing from the military when the kidz had nothin to do with it. if u want to get to get killed go ahead. if u want to kill yourself just suicide. the commercials that the army has are so fake. many people have came to america with no arms, legs or even blind. the military is so fake, it won't get u to a good college , it will do nothing to u. u r doin a bad job. really bad job!u suk!

There are pluses and minuses.
You make some great, lifelong friends. I have had several opportunities I wouldn't have otherwise. There were times I liked it and times I hated it.
If you want a family in the near future forget about it. Your gone a lot.
Just comes down to what you want to do in life.
