When you see someone doing something wrong and you don't speak up, it's not golden. Ditto when someone is hurting another person or an animal, and you stand by without doing anything because "it's none of my business."
Silence is definitely not golden when it's the refuge of those who are too cowardly to speak up and do the right thing when the situation dictates.

When something needs to be said, you know it, and you don't speak up. For example, if at a gathering somebody you know is unfairly criticized, you know that, and say nothing. That silence is not golden, is dirty- greenish- ratty grey. Mediocre and stinky.
Otherwise silence feels good.

Men who don't talk to their wife and children hurt them much more than they often realize. We need to be proactive about our relationships, starting with the ones closest to us. It's hard for us, including me, but we need to make the effort or the problems will get worse. I'm a Christian. I believe God will help, but we definitely have a big part in it as well.
