What's The Hardest Instrument to Learn?

The violin. It takes years of practice for anybody to play something decent with a good tone. At least with the other instruments you can play an easy piece with good tone and be musical (good phrasing etc) fairly quickly, especially if you have a good teacher. I've found the cello and the viola easier than the violin, also string instruments, but that may be because they fit my body better.

How can anyone answer that unless we've learned every single instrument out there? I play flute, piccolo and harp, and even though I'm worst at the harp (only played a year and a half) I'd have to say the piccolo is hardest. It's like the flute but you need so much more air - I hyperventilate after only a few songs!

xylophone-like instruments called gambang in Indonesian music ensemble "Gamelan." Both hands play different tunes at the same time. They are not in harmony, or use same rhythmic patterns. They are not related as solo with accompanied voice. Every time you play one key, you have to mute it with one of the finger before playing another key. So most of the time, you seem to twist both wrists like wiggling snakes on the keyboard. I've played numerous instruments. This was the most difficult one I'd ever learned.

oboist is very correct in her answer. You need a background in advanced scale theory to fully understand the French Horn and oboe. In addition, you should be able to make your own double reeds for the oboe, and learning to produce acceptable intonation on both of these instruments is difficult for most people.

I've heard the oboe and french horn are hardest to learn. I can play the flute and clarinet, I want to learn the violin.

i play oboe and it's very difficult. i also play flute and clarinet.. they're both pretty easy
