My husband just received orders for Pensacola, Florida as an (USMC) instructor. We will be there for three years and are trying to plan for housing. If you're familiar with the area, what is base housing like? What is the housing off base like? Also, what places/areas (houses-not apartments!) would you recommend or not recommend living?

I know the University of West Florida is in that area and have information on that. Are there any community colleges or other universities? (I'm interested in pursuing a master's or getting my teaching certificate.)

Any information on Pensacola would be helpful in general! Thanks in advance!

It is a beautiful base, with many nice facilities. Not sure where your husband will be, There are actually several Naval installations in the local area.
It is the home of Naval Undergraduate Pilot Training, and many Naval Aviation Technical Schools. Along with the National Naval Aviation Museum.
Schools include UWF, Pcola Junior College, Pcola Comm College. On base you have Troy State and several others offering classes.
Many nice areas to live, Just remember the closer you are to water the more expensive housing becomes and higher insurance.
Beautiful White sand beaches are always close by. No matter where you choose to live.
Fl has no income tax and NW FL has some of best public schools in state.

I only went to recruiter school there back in 2004, but I think Pensacola is the Navy's nicest base. It is a beautiful base and they have great base facilities. Housing didn't look bad at all compared to most miltiary housing. I wouldn't sign up for anything 100% until you get there in person. It all depends on what YOU like. Some areas of town are not the greatest but that is my opinion. Everyone likes different things and Pensacola is one of those places that you really need to be in to pick your housing if you want to make sure you are happy. You can be safe and put your name on the housing list now just in case you like it but you will still have the opportunity to look in town for a place to live also. There is a Pensacola Junior College and the colleges that are offered on base for classes.

Pensacola was a very beautiful place. The base is right near Pensacola Bay, and it is a Navy base. I was there for 14 months for Avionics training and MATC Training, back in 2002. The commissary is off base, it has been a while since I've been there, so I don't know if they moved it on base or not. I can definetly help you out in this move, email me or IM me and I can give you all of the information you need.

Bring rain gear.... I was stationed there for a year and a half (school) I was actually on the intel base and didn't spend much time on the air base (virtual certainty that is where you will be). I didn't know anyone living in base housing, most people lived off base. Don't buy a house there, rent. Many people live in the Mobil, Alabama area (it's not far 15-20min.) and you may look there for school too.

I know that it is classified as an air force site, but afcrossroads.com has information on ALL military installations and the surrounding areas. Just make a username and click on the DOD Installation link and then choose the branch of service and then the base you are going to. I have found it helpful in all my pcs moves.
