Sometimes its a flea allergy and other times it could be demodex a sort of mange. Usually demodex shows up on the tips of he ears and follows on to the back an tail areas. However there are times when it could be an underlying condition so your best bet is to get your rottie checked by a vet. Hope this helps.

Hot spots can be caused by alot of things.Fleas, infections, allergies, and sometimes just plan boredom. I had a lab and a rottie both who did this and a great dane now that does it. My lab had an infection and with some pills she was better. My rottie we never did find out why she did it vet said some times they get a habit and can't kick it. My Dane he has allergies to everything so the littlest things make him dig. pay attention to when he or she digs the most what what you feed make sure you medicate for fleas. When you find the cause and fix it the hair will grow back. They do have some bitter lime spray that will help till you find out what is wrong.

Most often food allergies. Choose a food that does not have corn, wheat, white rice, or soy. Artemis, Wellness, Merrick, Innova Evo, California Natural, Chicken Soup, and Solid Gold are all good brands to try. Innova Evo is awesome for large dogs prone to allergies. Usually a change in diet will clear up most skin related problems. If you see no change after 6 months on the new food, consider having a vet do a skin allergy test for outdoor allergens.

If you can see skin, it may be fleabites, ringworm, allergies, or licking. You'll have to ask a Vet, who can look at it for a specific diagnosis an treatment. Hot spots can get raw & infected if the dog continues to lick them...
