Usually word salad is associated with people are psychotic, which are a group of serious illnesses that affect the mind, altering a person's ability to think clearly, make good judgments, respond emotionally, communicate effectively, understand reality and behave appropriately. However, even the most severe psychotic disorders usually are treatable.

Some diagnostic disorders, in this group include:

Schizophrenia: People with this illness have delusions and hallucinations -- that last longer than six months, usually with a decline in work, school and social functioning.

Schizoaffective disorder:symptoms of schizophrenia, along with as a serious mood or affective disorder, such as severe depression, mania (a disorder marked by periods of excessive energy) or bipolar disorder (a disorder with cyclical periods of depression and mania).
Schizophreniform disorder: symptoms of schizophrenia, but the symptoms last less than six months.

Psychosis. Schizophrenia is the "classic" psychotic disorder, but psychosis can be part of other disorders as well.

Someone could have Psychotic DIsorder Not Otherwise Specified, a Psychotic DIsorder Due to a general medical condition, a drug abuse related psychotic disorder, or psychotic features within Major Depression or Bipolar DIsorder.

Someone could have symptoms of psychosis but not meet the full criteria for Schizophrenia.
