Did not include the words 'Under God'. Under God was not added until 1954. This is not a matter of opinion, people. This is historical fact. This was the original pledge:
"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands- one nation indivisible-with liberty and justice for all."
You can want to keep 'Under God' in there or take it out, but the fact stands-it was not in there originally. To deny it makes people look rather silly, don't you think?

Father K- did you see the most previous question concerning the pledge of allegiance? About 10 people believed that the words 'Under God' were in there originally. I'm serious.

Funnana-so you're saying that pre-1954 we weren't blessed because those two words weren't in there? Right...

This is true and you may use either pre or post 1954 variety. Just either say or omit the words. I usually just omit "under God".
Before anyone gets on their high horse, God and I have a fine relationship -- we just keep politics and religion out of it. It makes it easier for the both of us and no one get's their feelings hurt.
Wouldn't that be nice if we all did that? think about it.
Actually the words "under God" were added because during the McCarthy years they thought no communist could stand to say the word God... silly them.

The original pledge was a *far* superior piece of writing ... actually poetic.
Think of the rhythm, and ideological simplicity of
"one nation indivisible".
Now look at the same phrase, butchered into pauses:
"one nation, under God, indivisible"
Notice the irony of taking our "nation indivisible" and by dividing up the phrase, they divided up a nation ... a nation divided between "believers" and "non-believers". Believers could continue to say the pledge with sincerity, while non-believers are now invited to either sit down (you're not qualified to be patriotic), or stand and say something that has no meaning to you.
It also established in writing, the equation patriotism=faith. And in that sense, the law passed that ammended this wording was a *blatant* violation of the 1st Amendment.
In short, they turned the pledge of allegiance into a prayer.
I am NOT an atheist ... but I think the addition of "under God" into the pledge was a terrible ideological and rhetorical mistake.

You are very correct. Even though it doesn't bother me personally for "under God" to be present in the pledge, I do see quite clearly the symbolism. And I think that if we do intend to be fair that it should be removed. Unfortunately, the pledge means very little to so many Americans anyway. The only real accomplishment would be getting one over on the Christians. I am not so much up for revenge as I am for paving the way for a better future. I would rather stir up attention to the fact that Americans should focus on the greatness of what America is all about. I am interested in seeing the birth of new patriotism. I am interested in people fighting for freedom because of what the freedom means -not so much because of how the freedom allows them to manipulate others.

What scares me more is that they don't know history. They just believe what they are told and don't even research stuff for themselves.
EDIT: I had to add this because the person above me reminded me. I find it funny that they say it should stay because we'll lose the blessing of God. So what they are saying is it's like a talisman. So they are practicing witchcraft.

Yeah, what gelfling said.
It's very sad when people lie, or when they've been lied to and repeat the lie.
Yes, they are silly, but I think most of them BELIEVE the silly.

Not only that, but it was written by a MINISTER who specifically did NOT include God AND was pissed when it was added in, since it forced people to use God's name in vain, which violates a Commandment.
