It could be chondromalacia which is the grinding or rubbing of the underside of the patella (kneecap) by the femur and/or tibia. It occurs often in runners and can be called runner's knee. It can also be painful going up or down stairs or walking down hills or anything sloped. Have an orthopedic doctor take a look at it. Sometimes physical therapy can help or working the quadriceps (if you work out at the gym), as the quads are the main stabilizer for the knee. Good luck.

Your doing the right thing. If you continue to be bothered then I would see my doctor. He'll probably send you for MRI's and then if needed an arthroscope to see what's going on in there. Today people tend to abuse their bodies with running, jumping, thinking they're doing well with the exercises Instead they're tearing themselves up inside.
You have more then several cartilages inside your knee that could be torn or stretched. The bones may be worn from arthritis, etc. see your doctor for proper assessments.

Your knee is probably out of alignment. You should see your doctor because there are several things they can do to correct this problem surgical and non surgical.
