every person is different and every person has a different body and every one runs different doesnt matter if your 10 or 25, their is no exact average for any age, you should try your best on everything you do and be proud no matter what, if you go 12 minutes of 5 minutes, if i were you i would train to build up my endurence to make my mile time faster every time i do it. So if you start out with an 8 minute mile on week one, by week 8 (if your practiceing) you should be able to get to 7:30. Their is no answer for the average time but just practice and do your best. what ever you go now, in 5-8 weeks (if your practiceing) you should aim for 30 seconds faster. I would say you should go under 7 minutes and whatever your time is shoot for 30 seconds faster. I hope this helped.

Kyle, there's no way of telling how fast the average 20 yr old will run a mile, but, I am willing to bet that the AVERAGE 20 year old won't run a mile unless they have to. When I was 20 I was in the U S Army, I ran a mile in about 5.5 minutes. Not the fastest, but certainly not slow. The reason I used an approximate time is because we were timed in a 2 mile run, which I ran in a little over 11minutes on a regular basis. My only advice to you is to run at an enjoyable and safe pace for yourself. In other words, you can still push yourself and run a good time without straining or stressing your body. Not sure if you are trying to accomplish something, or if you have long term goals, ie, running a marathon, or competing. Without knowing your size and/or, agenda.....I would shoot for a 15 minute mile or less. If you scoff, or laugh at this idea, consider the following, you can run a 15 minute half mile on a football field, or a track and reap the benefits of working longer and getting far superior results. Let me quickly explain, you probaly don't lift your knees up too high when you run----try it. You can do this at a very moderate to slower pace and build killer legs. I know, I've been doing this for years.

5:00-6:00 would be considered good for a male non-runner. 6:00-6:30 would be considered above average. 6:30-8:30 would be average. Keep up with the running. Most people struggle to run a mile.

Hmm.. I always run without an ipod. What purpose are you running the mile for? Is it for enjoyment or are you aiming to finish first? If you are running it for enjoyment, and all you want to do is to complete the mile; then having an ipod on would be great for you:) However, if you are running the mile as a race, then my advice would be nor to use it. You may get carried away with it and it may affect your run. If I run a mile for a race, I run and I just look straight ahead. All i think about is my breathing, however recently I have automatically started counting my steps..strange huh? haha But if it is a race, the Ipod would be great to get you going before the race. good luck!

Despite what you might hear or read, running is an individual sport where your biggest competitor is yourself. Averages are out the door because doing it is more important than someone giving you an arbitrary time to beat. Unless you have a specific goal in mind, you should consider running a lifelong journey, not a destination.
Good Luck

Running is a sport where u challenge yourself, I'd say about 20-22 mins for 3 miles, but that doesn't really matter, it's about giving 110% everytime, not your time
I train alone, not with a track club, I find that not timing yourself is good for your mentality, just give everything you've got, your best, and if you still don't win, at least you can live with it

I knew a 14 year old who ran a 6.5 minute mile, but he's been running since he was a fetus and he's never lost since he was about 7. So, I'd say anywhere between 6 and 7 minutes.
