two general types......container ( carries containers, duh) and break-bulk.carries individual crates, containers, odd sized pieces......very few of them left on long distance voyages; mostly small stuff doing short runs.

Then there are liners...ie they belong to a shipping line and run a certain route, leaving no fooling for sure on a certain day...and tramps ( or charter)......which belong to a company but don't have a set schedule or itinerary...they go where the cargo takes them and when the cargo is ready to go.....once again not as many as there once were
