it never has been, isn't and never will be. if you don't believe the bible, fine, thats you're choice, and i'm not going to stop you. but even the official dictionary deffinition(s) of the word point to it being a place of torment.
1. the place or state of punishment of the wicked after death; the abode of evil and condemned spirits; Gehenna or Tartarus.
2. any place or state of torment or misery: They made their father's life a hell on earth.
3. something that causes torment or misery
i'm not trying to come off as angry or intolerent or anything, you are free to believe whatever you choose, as am i and everyone else...i'm simply curious.

i have a couple comments to add after reading some of the responses i've gotten.
first off, i was moderately offended (though not surprised) to be called a fool. i was more surprised and offended however to be called cruel, and acused of intolerance and eternal hatered. althuogh there are some christians (a rather large amount) who are cruel, judgemental and hateful, what right do you have to asume that i am that way too? i was simply asking a question that i was curious about because i wanted to see what people thought about it. so i geuss in that sense, these responses answered my question, but at the same time, i ask again, what right have you who don't even know me to call me cruel and hateful. most off my friends aren't christians, some of them are gay or bi, and most make desicions i disagree with (religiously and otherwise). but i don't care for them any less. Jesus was the most tolerent person in history...ever. he was not judgemental or intolerant.

he didn't shun, hate or judge anyone. he talked to, had dinner with, loved and forgave EVERYONE. he is the ultimate model of the ultimate loving lifestyle.
rather than make me hateful or intolerant (or cruel), my faith challenges me to be more tolerant, loving and forgiving. true christianity is following christ and thus mirroring his lifestyle. hate, intolerance, cruelty and judgement are in no way part of being a true jesus follower. those who use they're faith as an excuse for those actions and feelings are not truely following the example Jesus set for us.
i guess, if you really want to, you can continue to think i am cruel and intolerant, and maybe in some ways i am, i am after all, in no way perfect. however, i'll have you know that my faith motivates me to strive to be loving and tolerant as Jesus was.

one more thing. God isn't cruel either. he does not want us to burn in eternal punishment, hense, Jesus died on the cross as the sacrificial lamb. he then gave us a chance and a choice. we can choose forgiveness and repent, or we can not. but rather than make us mindless zombies who all lvoe and worship him (falsly, seeing as it would be without choice) God gave us the free will to choose.
if God was as cruel as people say, he would not have sent his son Jesus Christ to die for our sins, but let us all burn in hell where every single one of us (myself included) belong. the very heart of christianity is not about hate and cruelty, but love and forgiveness.

They're trying to avoid the subejct. It is a place of punishment, and should not be made a joke. But that's what people do when they are nervous. I'm not making excuses, just answering your question.

you're no fool and i agree that too many folks see hell as a party. my own personal view on this is heaven is a place with no conflict and hell is non-stop conflict, i wouldn't know what to do in a place with nothing to fight so quite simply hell is a world i could understand while in heaven the one thing i am very good at serves no real purpose, for some reason the thought of conflict ending bothers me

There is no torment worse than what can and has been created here on Earth. If this god of yours has created something worse, you are a fool for believing he is loving in any way. If you believe that anyone deserve torture for all eternity, you are just as cruel as your imaginary god, and you are a threat to the future of mankind.
The part of hell that appeals to people who claim it is a party is the part where people such as yourself are far away and out of reach. The pure absence of eternal hatred and cruel minds is a very good reason to celebrate and party. Think on that.

I view the idea of hell as a party. Just think about it, none of the pimps, the drug dealers, the people who buy liqour for minors, the whores, or any of the other people who make life more interesting are going to heaven! So, by default, the whole party is going to hell. It'd be like Miami, hot, sweaty, a really big party with great possibilties for tanning...

Considering the people that usually say that are Atheists and don't believe in hell more then likely it's a joke.

Those rejecting Jesus and wanting to hold on to their sin won't be decorating the place of torment for a huge party.

For some it's easier not to see the truth. They would rather leave on their blindfolds, than to look upon and worship a Loving God.

there are those that do not view hell at all. at least not as a place apart from where we are now. heaven, hell, both are in the minds of man, where man is, there also are the concepts of heaven and hell, and each creates his own. Therein lies our "free will", we can choose to create hell or heaven in our minds and lives.

All of the people I respect have been told they are going to hell. I will be in good company if it even exists. Have a nice day.

I was about to ask this question too! It's so annoying. What did Johnny Depp say in that one movie. "Better to party in Hell than to serve in Heaven"?
It's the total opposite, Hell is torment, Heaven is Paradise. You don't SERVE.
