I have been training for a 5k for about a month now and the other day I went out to run and my ankle was in so much pain when i started. I have no injuries to my ankle and did not twist it recently. In addition, I am on a training schedule to build up my bones and joints properly and not increasing more than 10% a week. Any suggestions on what is causing this and how to make it better. I just went out and bought a elastic ankle wrap (it actually is like a sock with a whole in the ball of my foot and covers my ankle). I also didnt run for a few days and then I ran again and the pain came back...I know I should get it checked out by a doctor, I just dont have any insurance at the moment and when it kicks in I will go...so any suggestions until then...I really dont want to not run until I go to the doctors...(which is in a month when I get my insurance) Thanks for any help..

warm up and warm down and do lots of stretching to prevent injuries. you don really have to go to the doctor i will know their reply for such a case:' Stop running and see how it goes. rest well. I will give you exemption from physical activities for...."

Sorry mate, but you're going to have to "not run". Your doctor will be right if he/she gives this advice. I ran the London Marathon and developed pains without obvious injury and the only thing there was to do was rest. It sounds like the tissue is inflamed. You could try ibuprofen - an anti-inflammatory and rest. Never take ibuprofen before a run or immediately after. If it feels like cartilage, then use ice. If it's muscular, use heat. Also, when you do return to running, don't just run. Do muscle building as well. The muscles need to be strong to work efficiently and this also takes pressure off the ligaments and tendons. You could take the time away from running whilst healing your ankle and do weight training. What you have is usage inflammation that will get worse if you keep running. Take the time to heal your ankle, THEN you can get back on the treadmill. It is the difference between taking a little time off or not running at all. If you're training for the marathon as well. This is crucial advice and the same advice you will get from trainers and doctors. Sorry.

I'm the exact same way, so I defenitely know how you feel.

I was in track my freshmen year of highschool, and after that I just couldn't do it anymore because my ankles are so weak.

I know you don't want to go to a doctor, but you probably should. When I went, they showed me things to do to try and make the pain subside. Or perhaps there is an athletic trainer you can go see?

You can tape it for when you are actually running the 5k if you want, but honestly I don't reccommend it otherwise. Taping your ankles everytime you run only makes it weaker and more painful without the tape. I use to tape mine a lot, and then my couch yelled at me for it.

I have a stretchy band I use to do ankle stretches with before I run. You should really see a trainer or someone about getting one; I got it free, and it does wonders.

Also, make sure your running shoes are good. Sometimes that can be a lot of the problem.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?

Can't tell you what you want to hear, sorry. YOu gotta stop before you do PERMANENT damage to your ankle.

I can't tell you what the problem is nor the cure, but I'd sure use ice on it every night, and stay off the running until you get the answer.

I was training for a marathon and had a terrible pain deep inside my lower leg. Every run it started hurting after about a half mile. I suspected a stress fracture and knew that whether it was or not, I could not continue to run on it. I didn't run for a full month. Never had a problem after that.

Don't jeopardize your mobility for a lifetime for a temporary short-term goal.

Good Luck

Stop running for now and then when the insurance kicks in you need to go to the doctor. Then the doctor can tell you what to do so you can get back to running.
