I am asking with all due respect because I am curious to know what it is you are asking when you ask someone to pray for you, or when you announce that you will accept prayer requests.
The Bible is specific about prayer, read on...
"The Bible book of Hebrews speaks of a person that “approaches God.” (Hebrews 11:6) Who is this God? There is but one almighty God, though there are many man-made and false gods. (1 Corinthians 8:5, 6) The almighty God of the Bible is named Jehovah. (Psalm 83:18) He is the Creator of all things, and for this reason prayer should be directed only to him. Jesus Christ clearly taught his followers to pray: “Our Father in the heavens.” (Matthew 6:9) No, Jesus did not teach his disciples to pray to him, to his mother Mary, or to any other person. But God now requires that we recognize the position of his Son and offer all our prayers in Jesus’ name. That is why Christ told his followers: “No one comes to the Father except through me.”—John 14:6."

So-called "prayer requests" are entirely Scriptural and correct, when they are sincere.
(Jeremiah 42:1-4) All the people, from the smallest one even to the greatest one, approached and said to Jeremiah the prophet: “May our request for favor, please, fall before you, and do you pray in our behalf to Jehovah your God, in behalf of all... And may Jehovah your God tell us the way in which we should walk and the thing that we should do.” At that Jeremiah the prophet said to them: “I have heard. Here I am praying to Jehovah your God according to your words
(1 Samuel 12:19,20,23) And all the people began to say to Samuel: “Pray in behalf of your servants to Jehovah your God, as we do not want to die; because we have added to all our sins an evil in asking for ourselves a king.” So Samuel said to the people: “Do not be afraid. ...As for me also, it is unthinkable, on my part, to sin against Jehovah by ceasing to pray in your behalf
The pattern established by the Hebrew prophets continued in the Christian Scriptures.
(Romans 1:9) Without ceasing I always make mention of you in my prayers
(Colossians 1:9) We, from the day we heard of it, have not ceased praying for you
(2 Timothy 1:3) I never leave off remembering you in my [prayerful] supplications, night and day

DreamStuff, i point out again you are brilliant, your question and your answers show that clearly. i will give you a simple answer that i use with little kids when they ask the same question. if you have a clump of mud and a clump of chocolate and you put both in the sun, what happens. the kids immediately say, the mud gets as hard as rock, and the chocolate melts. so it is with the hearts of men. when exposed to the revelation of God through Jesus, men's hearts soften or they harden. ask a child why the mud gets hard and the chocolate gets soft and they can't tell you why, not understanding what is made of, but they know that each is made of different stuff. people don't eat mud as a rule. again, so it is with the hearts of men. some respond, some do not. this is where the doctrine of irresistible grace comes from. it is also the birth place for the doctrine of election and predestination. prayer works by affecting the hearts of men to respond to the grace of the LORD. how you respond determines your future in eternity. the workings of prayer per se are known only to God himself, but we see the effects. funny thing about you, Dream Stuff, you may well be one of the best minds and most coherent person who is in this forum.

Prayer is a personal experience and intimate connection with our Heavenly Father. We live in a world where bad things happen to people and people are tempted to screw up. Praying for another person not only helps that person find God in the midst of trouble, but also helps us recognize the blessings that God gives us daily! Prayer is a personal experience and intimate connection with our Heavenly Father.

-That is why Christ told his followers: “No one comes to the Father except through me.”—John 14:6."
-He means that you wont get into heaven unless you acknowledge him as your personal saviour.
"If you deny me before man I will deny you before my father"
-Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
-Basically meaning that
if anyone( me, you, anyone) comes before God in prayer, you must believe that he exsists
-and God(also called jehovah) says to pray in Jesus' name because it is THROUGH Jesus that we can come before God. Because of Jesus we are forgiven by God for our sins.
when you ask someone to pray for you, you are asking that other christians support and come to God for you also.
So when you agree to pray for someone your agreeing to keep them in your mind and ask God to be with them. The more prayers you get, the better!

When requested, I always pray with someone, not for them. I pray for people who do not have the will or desire to pray for themselves.
