One very important thing is to not judge your ideas too soon when they come to you. Just think about them and let them percolate for a while. Otherwise your mind will stop coming up with things.

We all go through gaps in time where it seems like our creative side has took a vacation. This has happened to me with art, for a whole year. Your changing, and so is the world. Your mind may be somewhere else, but it will eventually come back to the creative side, and you'll soon burst out with beautiful music. It just takes some exploring and time. This is the searching part. Try distancing your self from others, and meditate on your self. Most musicians and artists turn to hallucinogens, or other things becuase they feel it makes them more creative. I never did so my self, don't recommend it, because you would depend on it your whole life, possibly. I think as beings, we can be creative sober. These are just bridges we cross.

Learn music theory. Knowing how something works is one thing, knowing why it works is quite another. The vast majority of casual musicians know nothing of theory but almost all of the professionals know it by heart. Just by learning your pentatonic scales you can improvise with confidence in any song as long as you know the key the song is being played in and the corresponding scale for that key. Add in the "Nashville Number System" and you can play in any key you want with just a lead sheet. These two skill just touch the surface of music theory, the more you know the better you are and easier it is to be creative.

Learn more music from the artists you want to sound like and you'll subconsciously incorporate those styles of music into your own. Other than that, just practice free styling over a random scale or chord progression, or just spend an hour fooling around and trying weird crap; who knows, it might sound good.
