First of all, your exaggerating alot. you don't where them down to your knees.

second of all, it came from gangs and loose fitting pants.

And third, Its in style so don't deny it!!!

It started in prisons. Prisons don't issue out clothing that fit very well, and they can't give them belts or anything to hold their pants up because they may use them as a weapon or hang themselves in their cell. It's also related to poor neighborhoods where many kids receive hand-me-downs that are way too big. In my opinion, it became a popular look by artists in the hip-hop genre who have spent time in prison wearing their clothes like that. Down to your knees is an exaggeration..

Regardless of how this "fad" started, it look stupid and in bad taste. It makes me wonder if the parents of these people taught their kids how to get dressed. I, for one, do not want to see other people's underwear exposed under clothes. The waist of pants and shorts are meant to be at the waist. The crotch is meant to be at the crotch. The knees are meant to be at the knees. Every time I see some kid (it's mostly kids who wear their pants or shorts in this manner) dressed like this, I want to tell them to pull their britches up. I actually saw one kid go to apply for a job dressed like that. If I had been that store manager, I would not have even given that kid an application. It looks awful and this is one trend I will be glad to see the last of.

without disrespecting your other answers but they are wrong to an extent. It DID start in prison but not as a fashion statement but for easy access for "Big Daddy", you see if someone had their pants down low that meant they where a fish and belonged to someone. They were made available to "you know" when ever the urge hit their "Daddy". I know this because my great uncle was one of the first "Crypts" and not only shared that info but someone in the family has pics

A good friend of mine told me that the way that it started was in prision.... Those who wore their pants down below their boxers meant they liked it ... well that way.. The ones w/ their pants up were the Men... the others were receivers... If it is true I don't know... He heard that but, has been around.
I think it is ignorant to dress like that!

No i think its the most over used fashion statement ever. it started in prison because when you got there cops stripped you of possesions and if you were wearing a belt they took that because it can be used as a weapon, thus your oversized hand me downs sagged

I think it looks dumb and clearly the guys don't understand that those pants will be down around their knees again when they get old:)

I know I am going to get clobbered over this, it is ghetto wear.

Children were given their sibling's hand-me-downs because of unfavourable financial circumstances. I believe it was popularized in the 1990's.
