I have much experience here. Sometimes it is random.. but... usually you have fit a profile that they are looking for. Something in the way that you purchased your ticket or something in your appearance triggers their interest. Sprucing up a bit does seem to help. and.. having your s*** together at the Xray appears to ease the way. From your description it was probably just because you were tired and looking a little rough. If it continues to happen on future flights ask the supervisor whats up. There could be something on file and they will generally let you know. Luck with that!

My brother had to travel last minute for work and didn't need to check a bag and only bought a one way ticket. He was going to another site later so didn't need a round trip. He was searched. He said it went pretty well because he was polite and told the security people he knew they were only doing their job.

I flew as an airline pilot's listed passenger and got a boarding pass at the airport and when I went through security I, and my luggage, got checked over as if I were a criminal about to go to jail. It was so intrusive, invasive, and cold that I haven't flown since. I asked "why me" and they said it was written on my boarding pass.

It's usually something you did such as purchasing a one-way ticket at the last moment. That happened to me.

They probably suspect you of something.....you looked nervous or were acting fidgety. It could also be your destination or the place you're arriving from.....they want to take an extra look.
