the question should be the other way around.

Can China maintain its unique culture?
Certainly. It won't be the same as Chinese culture in the past, but it will still be unique. Look to Japan for an example of how traditional culture has adapted to westernisation and modernisation. My only issue with the preservation of Chinese culture is that it's often done in a very "artificial" manner with the choreographed dances, red lanterns and whatnot... more of a "display" than authentic culture. The Communist Party is partly to blame for this; in some respects, Taiwan is more Chinese than the Mainland.
As for electricity and lighting...
Is it truly desirable to preserve a backward living conditions? 200 years ago, most of the West farmed without electricity too... Let's not equate culture with underdevelopment.
And to comment on your symbolism...
Yes, China will be dominated by skyscrapers, but traditional Chinese food will still be dominant over McDonalds.

LOL @ McDonald's! As for food, never it would happen, I tell you, you picked the worst one to compare with authentic Chinese food!! You never can change 1.3 billion of Chinese to give up rice / noodles / steam buns and have Mcdonald's as daily meals.
China is still a very unique country. No matter how modern the cities now being developed, Chinese still cherish a lot of old values and traditional thinking, we have strong family bondings, 5000 years of history wouldn't be just erased by "Mcdonald's" "Starbucks", "Pizzahut"!!!!
In fact, its official language is Chinese only, so the western corporations have to sign CHINESE CONTRACTS (even with an English translation copy, the court would base on the Chinese version only) and follow the Chinese law system, tax system to do business in China, in every aspect of application, setting up a business, the procedures all are quite complicated, I have to tell you! Westernization in China? Sinonization in the world? In another way round? It is an interactive thing, Chinese are trying hard to learn English while the foreigners are also trying hard to learn Chinese.

It has survived everything else including the western influx 150 to 300 years ago. unfortunately the China that you are describing is almost gone today. Flying over China at night is like flying over the US. Lights pretty much everywhere. and the cities have lost all their charm. they are Grey and dingy and very crowded. Its to bad. There are still some areas that are nice and Mongolia is like it used to be. Of course there are many towns that are kept pristine for the tourists but the smaller villages are modernizing as we speak. so it goes!

I think China will fall to the westernization. I mean you cant kidd yourself it's already basically western in the big cities right? but the areas in the west I think will keep their culture for a few years coming. they havent changed alot in the past few years so it should take some time i suspect...

I like , and miss the China that I saw about ten years ago .So unique and special. It has grown so much in a decade and things are so different now.Why do they need westernization so much? Don't they know they are losing the essence that only can be found in their country and nowhere else?
