Which one is more playful? How long do they live? And when are they considered to be old?

These are two very different breeds. My guess is the lifespan is relatively the same since they are near the same size. They would be getting old at around 10. Both breeds are playful but Border Collies are a working dog and they need to have a job. That is what they want and if you don't have a job for them they will invite one. (herding kids, cats, chasing cars) With so much energy they can be destructive.
Goldens love to play but they to can be destructive if their energy isn't channeled correctly.
Border Collies however are one of the most intelligent breeds of dogs.

Both are wonderful dogs and very playful. The both types of dogs will require lots of attention and exercise on a daily basis; particularly the Border Collie.

IMHO, the Border Collie is the most intelligent dog in the world. But, the Golden Retriever is the most loyal.

In terms of time and attention, the Border Collie will require more since they become a little destructive when the get board and not exercised a lot. This type of dog is bred to run long distances each day and you will definitely need to keep him/her busy.

Well, I have a Border Collie that loves to play fetch with anything, he isn't picky!!! But then Border Collies were actually meant to herd, so that's probably why he likes to take after things.
They say they have a lifespan of 12 years, which is how old mine is and still going strong. Never know!

A border collie is very intelligent, but they can be a handful, because you have to train then and keep them engaged. They can also be energetic. They live about 12 -15 years

I like Goldens because they are intelligent, easy to train... and when they grow up, they can sleep 18 hours a day, while you are at school/work. They live about 13 -14 years. Smaller Goldens live a little longer.

I had a Border Collie for 7 yrs. till Liver cancer had to put him to sleep. The old rancher didn't want me to buy him as I was a senior cit. but I got him finally. They are a bundle of energy and I wore my arm out throwing balls. He even popped the ball up by himself. Need a lot of training as very excitable and jump up. Now a Golden well maybe not all but daughter had one and the sweetest thing. Both have lots of fur and shed a lot.
