I am reminded of a nursery rhyme from my youth:

Yet another great truth I record in my verse,
That some Vipers are venomous, some the reverse.
A fact you may prove if you try,
By procuring two vipers and letting them bite.
With the first you are only the worse for a fright,
But after the second you die.

Does that help?

Actually, very few species of mushroom are actually poisonous. A test commonly practiced consists of peeling off the upper skin from a mushroom. If this can be done, the mushroom is considered edible.
Make sure the mushroom isn't young because that could make the test screw up
Also,
Avoid mushrooms with pores under the cap-top part.
Avoid mushrooms that have white spores, a ring, and a bulblike piece all on the same mushroom.
Avoid mushrooms having a white, milky juice (red juice is good)
Avoid mushrooms that are brightly colored and where the gills are equal length.

Look in the National Audubon's guide to North American mushroom's. If it's something you are pretty sure is edible then clean and try only a very small piece. If you don't get an upset stomach then try a little larger piece the next day. The best thing is to positively identify a mushroom before trying them.

I've observed in my yard, the ones that aren't poisonous have little bites eaten out of them (vole bites). Voles are types of wild mice. I just observed 2 with red caps yesterday, one was double the size of the other and they both had bites out of them. We've had a lot of rain and our grass isn't cut short so I find them in the grass. The poisonous ones are never disturbed I guess. Have lived in Missouri 26 years. Morels and one other kind are all that we pick because we have so many different ones and I don't take chances.

read up on it. some shrooms give clues. i don't know where you live, but an example of this in Britain is there is a common edible mushroom and a poisonous one that looks very similar to it, the yellow stainer, except that when you cook it it starts to smell like tcp. there's a lot to learn.

Don't eat any wild mushroom. Why would you take the chance? And if it has little mouse bites in it, like someone suggested was a good sign, well eeew! First, it has mouse spit on it, and second, how do you know the mouse didn't just go and die? Stick with the grocery store.
