Should I just buy it from the Windows home site? Any way I could get it cheaper?

I buy a lot from Amazon. Items are listed by price.

With Vista being new, it will be sometime before it comes down in price, if ever. If you do not have a legitimate copy, you will not be able to upgrade and it will probably shutdown after 30 days.

In my opinion, it is always better to go legitimate, and get the CD with product key. Makes life easier if you ever have to reinstall. When you install/activate, stop a second and make note of the product key. You will need it if you ever have need to contact Microsoft.

First, if you bought your computer new in the last year or so, it might ok. To check go to the microsoft website at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/buyorupgrade/upgradeadvisor.mspx
and download the Vista advisor. Run this on your computer and it will advise you about your computers readiness. If you can use vista or can make the upgrades needed I would try ebay to get a good price. Vista will be cheeper there than at the store. You can get a real sealed in the box brand new with key. Shop wise.

Also if you have a family geek or know one that will do the install for you it is best to do a clean install by wiping the hard drive first. Vista works best as an upgrade when you do a clean install or have just installed xp then upgrade.

The best way to upgrade to Windows Vista would be buying a new computer with a Vista operating system unless you're absolutely sure your computer is 100% compatible with Vista.

Well if you want a "genuine" Vista upgrade, you need to get it from a retail store or download it from the microsoft website. You can also get it free but it is not "genuine". You can download a pirated version from www.aresgalaxy.org

You could just download it, but that is illegal. Some places will have deals, but really there is no "best" way.
