We DON'T want a hairless cat.
What are some ways of reducing Dad's allergies? Can the kitten be confined to only my room and sometimes outdoors?
Thanks a lot!

p.s. We already have the cat picked out.

Dad thinks they're cute, but...he's allergic.
It's not like boils or anything, it's itchy and watery eyes; sneezing.

Get a cat when you have your own place.

My husband has allergies to cats and it is horrible. It's like he has bronchitis and is completely miserable. Don't do that to your dad. He loves you.

I don't know about the cat you have picked out, unless your dad is willing to go through having treatment for his allergies. The good news is that you no longer have to take allergy shots but they have drops instead.
There is however a new breed of cat that is hypoallergenic. I tried to find my info on them but couldn't find it. I know they are called allercat. Maybe you can find them on the web. They are not hairless cats by the way. It's probably not actually hair that he's allergic to. The cats lick their hair to wash ot. People are allergic to the protein in the cats saliva. These cats are genetically different somehow and their saliva is hypoallergenic. There is a waiting list though. Good luck!!

I think you should visit a vet, and ask what kind of cats are good if you're allergic.
Check your local pharmacy and see what prescriptions they have.
The kitten certainly would need alot of time outdoors, they sleep alot, though, so confining it to sleeping in your room would be ok, but cats and kittens like to roam, so it would need time outdoors alot, too.
I recommend getting a cat or kitten from the animal shelter, because dogs and cats and kittens from the pet store, don't last very long. :(
Good luck and hope this helps a little! :)

Get a cat when you move out. It would be be horrible to confine your cat to a small room and "sometimes outdoors". It would aslo be horrible to do that to your dad. He has allergies. No offense, but you're being selfish. Consider what you dad would have to go through if you got a cat.

if your dad's allergies are that bad then you will have to wait to get a cat when you move out. And usually people are allergic to cat saliva NOT the fur

If you really want the cat, you can go to the doctor and have your dad get allergy medicine for it. My Mom is like that.

Well, i live with my mom and sisters and they are allergic to cats too. So Tito (my sooo cute cat) lives in my bedroom, and we i go to work i leave him in the backyard with someone to check him out so he wouldn't leave home the first week. Now he comes back every night to sleep inside the house and when the morning comes he goes out.
Also, my mom and sisters luuuuv Tito although they were not happy with the idea. Fight for ur kitty! :) And good luck with that!

There are shots your father can take, but ...

If *HE* doesn't want the cat, I don't think its fair to make
parts of the house off limits for him or make him take
shots.

You'll be able to have a cat in your own house when you
leave home.

Well there is nothing you can do.

Besides you will get bored of the cat and the cat will just want to live a life without you. It is just what cats do.
Sure they look all cute but they are not like dogs, they are solitary animals.

My sisters' husband is allergic to her two cats, and he takes medication for it.

Your dad can just go to his Doctor and ask about medication for the allergy.
