Someone at work came into my office the other day with a swollen face. He told me 'it is a boil'.
I know what a staph infection looks like...and the next day, he had a band-aid over it, but you could see the pus bleeding through. --I'm sure it's a staph infection and he has not been to a doctor for it.

I think they're contagious and can the bacteria can live on surfaces for a long time. I have a small child and do not want to bring this bacteria home with me.

My question is:

How contagious is it??? I am worried people at work will catch it and cause a break-out at work. Should I tell my boss about it?

Well I have staph. Not sure which kind or how I got it but every other month or so I have an outbreak. Sometimes its caused by an ingrown hair, sometimes a zit, or sometimes a flea, chigger, or mosquito bite.
Its very frustrating because they always put me on Bactrum and Bactrum always seems to give me yeast infections which I have to treat with the suppositories-which tend to give me a UTI-then i have to drink cranberry juice, take cranberry pills, and drink lots of water until it goes away.
Yeah, I hate staph-its a nightmare. You dont need to take any chances. Yes, let your boss know of the possibility and make the person you work with go the doctor and show a paper proving its not staph.

This is typical of someone who's ignorant to what ails him. He has a serious infection that could harm his heart, a staph infection will go directly into the blood stream and enter his heart creating problems there.

This is the cause of "don't pick your face or, pimples" and what doctors preach, a perfect example.
You and I all have a certain amount of staph on us, especially in our nasal areas. Our immune system takes care of this, if we start picking pimples, blackheads, etc and have constant cold sores and pick at them, sooner or later, we're going to inflame our staph. Our body just can't handle it.

Stay away from this guy, you won't catch anything unless you come into direct contact with his infection. He's the one that going to suffer through his stupidity, along with holes in his face if he comes through O.K. don't worry about it, just stay away from him. He might have something else also.

It can only cause you problems if the bacteria goes from his face to and open wound on your body. So as long as you keep his face away from you you'll be fine. So no smoochy smoochy.
