I live in SC. I went to visit my brother earlier this week and they are so impatient in traffic! In three minutes, they blew there horns more than I will blow mine in a year. I will be going back the week of the fourth, maybe I'll get used to it soon.

I live in NYC.....and we New Yorkers live a very fast paced type of lifestyle...where we like to get things done...
When these drivers are stuck in gridlock traffic...and they see that greenlight go but no movement....we become inpatient and just out of habit...honk our horns to get this going.....
You can't really blame us for being inpatient....thats just the lifestyle we are grown to because this city is truly a make it or break it type of town.....constantly under stress to make ends meet....
Regardless though....I love this city.....there something for everyone here....and so culturally diverse...its just an awesome place to live....

I live in a noisy urban area. New York City. It can't get much more noisy than this in the US. I feel that not a minute can go by during the day that somebody twenty cars back isn't laying on his horn because the car at the intersection is waiting for people to clear the crosswalk or some similar scenario. So, in the interest of helping to preserve the hearing of all pedestrians a little, I propose that all cars be manufactured with a horn inside that is as loud as the horn outside (subjectively speaking of course, no need to hurt the driver either). Obviously a difficult challenge would be to make it tamper-proof. Imagine the self control most people would be able to muster if they were forced to subject themselves to the same noise they make everybody outside their car put up with. The horn is intended for alerting people (pedestrians and other drivers) of an impending emergency situation. Of course there are times you need to wake the person up in front of you at the light or other small things that twang your strings, Those are the times you would need to decide just how little would be enough to get them going without making yourself crazy. I drive, so it's not as if I don't understand how frustrating it can be. Some way to force a little restraint seems to be needed.

Well for one thing this isn't just a big city but rather a mega city. First off it is illegal to sound you're horn in Manhattan unless it's for emergency but there are plenty of people that don't care about the laws of the road. Secondly sounding you're car horn alerts the traffic ahead of you to move. Traffic is a major problem in New York City so there's a lot of people using their horns when they need to.

It actually makes no sense to blow your horn in NYC, because it does nothing but annoy other people. It seems to be an unspoken rule that you can let off steam, most New Yorkers pay no attention to beeping horns. Once you are in traffic and you get into the swing of things you start to blow your horn and become part of the group.

Because they're impatient, selfish, jerks, trapped like rats in a maze. Traffic volume is huge, and everyone is trying to get somewhere in a hurry, using an outdated traffic system. It's not just New York either, Bombay, Singapore, and many other cities have the same problem.

People tend to express their anger in a car, and they've got built up anger in NYC. I used to live there for ten years and I often wished that there were some kind of law that allowed each car only 3 honks a day (maybe 5 for cabs) If they go over their limit the car would shut down and not start until the next day.

New Yorkers blow their horn because it is the only thing that they have control over. The traffic is out of their hand. So to relieve their frustration they horn.
