I have a 10 year old female cat, and i just got a 10 week old male kitten, my female cat is not so hot about the new kitten, she doesn't mind him if he is minding his own buisness, but he won't leave her alone, he jumps on her and always wants to play with her, so i fugured that i better let him get swat by her a few times and maybe he will learn, but i don't think it's working.

HAHAHA cats are funny arent they. I had a 5 yr old female and got a 3 week old kitten. The kitten was all over the 5 yr old and she HATED IT!! The kitten swore she was all grown trying to fight with the other one.. Trust me no matter how much the older 1 swats the baby, he'll never stop!!! My baby is now 3 and the older one is 8 and they still wrestle and the baby STILL jumps on the other one and everything. But if you keep them apart they cry for eachother .. your 10 yr old cat will grow to tolerate the kitten, and they'll eventually become friends .. good luck with your kids =]

What you probably should have done is introduce them slowly. Start by keeping them separate, but able to smell each other. After a week, take the kitten out for a few minutes and see how the older reacts. There will probably be hissing. Pet the kitten, then pet the older cat. Do this a few times, then gradually extend the time each day. I have three, bringing in the first one went pretty well, but the second cat doesn't like the third and it's been 5 months.

Give it time. Last March, I introduced a 7month old into our home with a 13 & 15 year old. The kitten wants to play all the time and regularly chases the 13 year old, who sometimes plays along and other times runs to Mom & Dad for solice. The kitten and the 15 year old will tolerate each other but still hiss and are territorial when they come face to face. I kept them separate for 1 month unless my husband or I was there to supervise. Now they all have free run of the house and I don't fear that any will be hurt. Once the hissing starts the 15 year old just looks at the kitten and walks away.

I think in time it will work. It won't be perfect because the little one will always want to play, but the older one will make it clear when she has had enough, and the hissing and swatting will make the kitten stop for the time being.

Just give them time--it will work. I just got a new kitten in January (7 mos.old). My older cat is 10 years old---he still hisses at the kitten but they get along.

Cats are territorial, and they need to be introduced to other animals very slowly so they can get used to each other before a face-to-face confrontation. Slow introductions help prevent fearful and aggressive problems from developing. Here are some guidelines to help make the introductions go smoothly:
Here are the steps:
1.) Confinement
2.) The Old Switcheroo
3.) Slow and Steady Wins the Race
4.) Precautionary Measures

i love cats, have had 100's of em over the years, ...definitly do what your doing, the little one will eventually get the drift... trust me it might take some time, but he will learn, and if your female cat lives long enough she will probably end up liking the male

Sounds normal... they'll sort it out.
If the old cat is only swatting the kitten when its being annoying... she's pretty well accepted it already.

just leave them together and they will gut used to eachother. The younger one will realize that the other cat does not want to be bothered so he will most likely get bored of her and leave her alone after a wile.
