Not only do I own a chihuahua, but my mother rescues them. Some things you do need to know about the breed are:
~ They are a vocal breed, but they are not constant barkers. Of coarse you can get a barker in this breed such as any breed. They do express themselves vocally alot. You will hear them make almost a cooing noise when happy. They will whine when happy or upset. And they are great guard dogs despite thier size.
~ They tend to be a one person dog. The dog will pick their person and that will be it. Some dogs will tend to be aggressive towards other people, but some are affectionate to everyone. My mother's dog PJ is madly in love with her, but loves everyone. Not as much as my mother but very much.
~ Potty training these dogs can be difficult, but it is possiable.
~ These dogs do not get along well with children. They tend to be nervous around fast, jerky moving objects. They are notourious "fear biters" meaning when scared, they bite.
~ Socializing is key with these little tikes. As a pup bring these guys everywhere, the park, the pet store, friends houses, anywhere that is pet friendly. Allow strangers to pet your dog, other dogs (that you know and know they are dog friendly) sniff and play with your puppy. This will not only make your day watching your puppy's personality grow but also you will do your puppy untold good.
The best thing that I can recomend is to do your research. The AKC has an amazing site where you can do your research. Make sure that you are prepared to be a forever home to a dog that can live 15-20 years, and not just getting one because they are Hollywoods newest accessary (which is why most people are getting them right now). As for finding a calm one find a submissive one. Watch the puppies as you walk in, the "shy one" that isn't jumping around like crazy, the one that is easily put on its back and stays there and the one that will let you take away toys, treats and anything else will be calm and easily trained. As for buying it DO NOT BUY FROM A PET STORE!!!! These pet stores that sell pure breds are usually buying them from puppy mills, which I can tell you from experiance, are horrific torture houses for dogs. Not to mention you can't meet the puppy's parents and see what they are like which is a great window into what your puppy will be like. Buy from a newspaper ad or better yet a rescue group. If buying from a newspaper ask to see the parents, all the puppies and their living enviroment. www.petfinder.com is a great way to find a pure bred dog that needs a home!
Thanks and good luck!

There is no such thing as a teacup chihuahuas.
They are just small size chihuahuas as far as AKC a dog for show should be 6 pounds or under. I have a 2.3 ounce chi now he is 1 1/2 years old and therefore full grown.
You also need to know that the smaller they are the more health problems they have. The two major things is water on the brain and low blood sugar that can cause seizures and possible death.
The smaller ones are usually more expensive and you would be lucky to find one for under $400 the ones that are 4-6 pounds are closer to $350 or more and the really large ones closer to 8-15 pounds you may possibility find them about $250 and up.

No, no. Pet shops are BAD places to get dogs. Plus teacups cost thousands of dollars in health care and the purchasing price. The only teacup that much money would be a badly bred pet store pup--and pet store animals have a TON of problems, whether the animal is teacup or not.
Go to http://www.petfinder.com and you will find a dog just for you and the adoption fee is inside your price range.

You might be able to, but it's not a good idea at all.. ALL pet stores sell puppies that they get from Puppymills.. No ethical breeder would allow their puppies to be sold in a pet store.. only puppymills would do that.. You are getting a dog that is bred only for profit, without any attention to standard, temperament, health etc.. You will be helping a puppymill stay in business, and a crappy pet store that is willing to work with puppymills selling their puppies. to also stay in business..
Check Chihuahua rescue, they are likely to have thousands available.

No, pets store dogs are much more expensive! Your best bet would be to search for online breeders or look in the newspaper and see if there are any for sale. You are much more likely to find a dog in your price range! Good luck!

Please do not buy a dog from a pet store. All of those dogs are from puppy mills.
Go to the AKC website and find a good breeder, or, BETTER YET, go to www.petfinder.com and find a chihuahua near you who needs a home.

Go to petfinder.com type in left hand side of screen info they want or breed you want. You can rescue them at this site.
If purchasing from breeder only (no pet shop pups PLEASE!)Chi's tend to be one person dog...make sure you socialize it to different people while young. No walking on ground, nose to nose with other dogs till around 4 months when puppy shots are okay. They can be very dear dogs but must socialize them to different situations.

OK, suppose that you can get the dog for $ 300. Would you be willing or able to provide thousands for potential vet expenses?
I dont want to sound mean :)
