"cult' just means worship or public honor in its original sense.
I think the word, which is intended as an insult, should be retired

When someone doesn't agree with a particular point of view (theology in this case) but is unable to refute the theology, they seek to defame those promoting the point they disagree with in the hopes they'll stop.

Just because someone calls a given religion/denomination a cult, doesn't make it so. It doesn't matter what these people think. What matters is what the Man Upstairs thinks.

Calling a religion/denomination a "cult" simply because one disagrees with it's beliefs is, for lack of a better term, childish behavior. Those people, and their ad hominem attacks should be quickly dismissed as such.

A cult is a religion that grows up amidst another established religion. Judaism was a cult among the Canaanites. Christianity was a cult to the Jews and Romans. Calvinism was a cult to the Catholics. Quakerism was a cult to the Calvinists.

I agree with you. The word CULT has developed a bad meaning due to the way it has been used (with disrespect toward groups of people). Kind of like when a man says he's feeling gay, and people instantly frown because "gay" has a totally different meaning today due to the bad way in which it's been used. An a-s-s used to be a mule and today it's somebody's buttock area.

It all depends on who says it, it's kinda like the N word, if I say it, I'll probably get sued or beaten up, but if a rapper says it, he'll make millions. Lots of people who are part of cults will tell you that they are, but if someone outside of it says it, they assume that they are using it's negative connotation and get angry about it. By definition it is not a negative thing.

Sometimes people do strange things to feel better about themselves. If calling another's religion a cult makes them feel good, they'll do it. It's a combination of poor self-esteem and intolerance.
