A really good rule to adopt is that whenever you have any doubts and questions about the health of your dog, consult an expert, your vet. Do not trust the health of your dog to strangers on the Internet that can't examine your dog. Have put forth that, you should be familiar with the habits of your dog and when it deviates from the norm you should become very wary and cautious. If your dog is active and suddenly isn't, if it eats with abandon and suddenly doesn't, if it has normal stools and suddenly doesn't, and on and on.

Aside from what has already been mentioned, a dogs nose should be cool and moist. If it's dry and warm thats a sure sign that something is up!

the first sign is usually a change in behavior or appetite. check eyes to make sure they are bright and clear and make sure that he goes to the bathroom regularly. if you think your dog is sick, though, you should take him/her to the vet right away. sometimes there are no outward signs that a dog is sick.

He will behave the same as a person would. Lack of appetite, vomiting, fever, diarrhea, constipation, lack of energy, poor coat, low weight, lack of interest in the things he used to do.
If you see any of these symptons, he needs to go to a vet.
