First you brush your teeth really well cause you wont get under the brace for a long time. you take an xray and make molds of your mouth then for the actual procedure you sit down. They will put this guard on your mouth to keep it open and your tounge away fm your teeth. They will put a mouthguard (it is the brackets on cement in the shape of the mold) on your teth. Then they put this badtasting gel over your gums and teeth and then They take a laser (that looks like a hairdryer with blue light coming out of it) and put it over the brackets to dry the cement and brackets while on your teeth. They will take the extra cement off and put a wire connetcting the brackets. They will then add some rubberbands in the color of your choice over the wire to connect them. They will give you a kit with everything you need and they will tell you what you need to know. Dont worry about it. It wont hurt during the process but your mouth will b sore for 3 days MAXIUMUM afterwards. It will go away. Every appt after that the pain will last for all of 3 hrs. I have had braces twice (3rd grade and now in 7th) and i am getting them off tomarrow. They usually dont numb your mouth unless they are taking excess gum tissue from your mouth. It doesnt hurt during hte procedure. Have fun and ask if you can watch it with the mirror. (its more fun that way and you can c what they are doing). Its boring cause its so long. but its fun!!!

That site may help you.
On a scale factor of 1 - 10, the PROCESS isn't even a 1, the process on putting them on is painless (the only thing I've heard about it is that you may get an achy mouth due to the fact your mouth is stretched for a long time). Afterwards, I would say a 7. It really only the first week or so that is painful. The first week or so is the most painful during braces, you have gotten over the worst stage after that.
They don't numb your mouth because there is no need to. Everything they do is totally painless.
The procedure time will differ for every patient and every ortho. For what it is worth, it took 45 minutes to apply my full set of braces (upper and lower).

I have bracs currently and believe it or not, I wanted them. Now I dont know what I was thinking. When you go in all they do is put very sticky clear stuff on each on your teeth that they will apply the braces to. Next they apply a bracket to each tooth. Then they will put like a blue light against the teeth. It doesn't hurt like at all but it will the day after. There is no numbing so don't worry. Then they will give you like a color sheet to choose the color of the rubber bands. It's really no big deal. Make sure to buy lots of soft food for like a week. Good luck!

It depends on your orthodontist, but it's a two step procedure if they use molar bands. If not it's quicker and only one step. I did have molar bands put on.
The first appointment is about 10 minutes and involves placing little rubber spacers around your first molars. These HURT like crazy (by far the worst part of braces so take heart that it is a short time) then you go back in a week or two for braces.
The second appointment is about an hour per arch (top/bottom - usually done seperately - I don't even have my bottoms yet and I've had tops for two months). At this appointment, metal bands are shaped around your molars and cemented in place. They have to hammer them on but nothing too bad.
Then you brush your teeth to get excess cement off.
Back to the chair, this time they put in lip retractors to hold your lips back and start prepping your teeth. In my case this involved a chemical (acid) etchant and a powder etchant to prep the enamel for the adhesive used to glue the brackets down. Acid etches can taste bad I know so avoid tasting it (which I managed to do).
Then the teeth will be dried and a base sealant will be put on. The orthodontist will stick down each bracket one by one with some light-cure cement and when it's in place will do a short cure to hold it steady.
After all the brackets are on, the assistant cures them for longer and mine used two kinds of light (a halogen and an LED) to assure the best possible bond.
Then your teeth are rinsed out, and your first archwire is placed.
Finally the archwire is tied down with elastomeric ligatures (little colored rubber ties - the fun part they come in lots of colors!) and the ends trimmed and bent inward so they don't poke you.
You have braces!!!!
Depending on the types of brackets used, you may not get spacers and molar bands, and you may not get elastomeric ligatures (colored rubber ties). Otherwise it should be pretty similar.
P.S. at no point do they numb you and it does not hurt. The spacers do hurt. Advil helps. Placing the braces does not.

Nope - it takes a long time, because they basically cement something to every tooth... they have to dry each tooth and stick it on and then sit, and then they put the wires between. If you're doing rubber bands, then a few of your teeth in the back will have to be fitted with rings that go all the way around your tooth, so it can withstand the pressure of the rubber bands. And if you have an expander, you'll have that put in on the top of your mouth too. It doesn't hurt, except maybe when they put the rings around the back teeth (if they have the wrong size, which is what happened with me). But all in all, it's just a waiting game. Bring your iPod.

make sure it is done by a true orthodontist, a dentist who has gone to a specialty school, after dental school. Lots of dentists now a days are trying to put braces on but have not gone through the formal best training. I have braces myself and am a dental assistant in a pediatric/orthodontic office. After they obtain "records" which are photos of you and the position of your teeth, they will have you back to place the braces on. it took about 1-2 hours total. the worst part was the etchant it tasted like sour lemons! also they have you take a medication called saltropine that drys out your mouth. I wasn't sore until the next day, it was pretty bad, I am not gonna lie. I took motrin and tylenol. Now everytime I get an adjustment I am sore for a few days and unable to chew. Its a lot of work but in the end it will be totally worth it.
good luck.

first off it takes about an hour and a half
you dit down, and they make sure your teeth are really clean. They then put thsi plastic device in your mouth so they can see your teeth and nothing touches them. It doesnt hurt, put chapstick on your lips first though, then they put stuff on your teeth, and one of them are really bitter so try to not touch it with your tongue when they rinse your mouth. they make the mixture of glue and put pne brackt on at a time-they use this like tooth blow dryer on each one for a few minutes. Until its done. They t hen attach the wires, give you supplies, tell you how to take care of them
and then your off!
it startsto hurt a few hours later so take a ibiprofin first-go and eat right when you get home! because it will hurt!
the next morning when you wake up your mouth is really sore, but the next morning is worse! your mouth will hurt like a *****!
i would say overall the pain is anywhere from 6-8

u sit on the chair then they clean ur teeth and then put glue on each of the brackets and then one by one glue them on ur teeth. then they take a blue light thing and make the glue harden. they then put in the wire and u get to pic the colors of the bands that they put on ur braces. ur mouth becomes sore after an hour or two and make sure u take some tylenol or something if it bothers u
there is no numbing of the mouth
the process of putting on the braces doesnt hurt but afterwards when ur teeth start to move it does start to hurt
it takes about 1-2 hours to finish the whole thing so bring something like ur ipod so u dont get bored out of ur mind like i did!!!
good luck!

I am an orthodontic assistant/lab supervisor. I would be more than happy to answer this question for you.
The initial visit is to determine what type of treatment is needed and to give an estimate of how long your treatment will be.
Diagnostic records will be taken. ( Pictures and Pan & Ceph X-rays)
Before appliances are placed on, you must go to your dentist for a cleaning and an examination. If any dental work is needed, it must be completed.
On the initial banding visit, your teeth will be etched to ensure sucessful bonding. (Etching is a liquid that is rubbed on your teeth)
Bonding glue is placed on the brackets and then the brackets are placed on your teeth.
A curing light is shined on each bracket to secure to bond.
Arch wires are placed in and engaged in each bracket. The ends are clipped to avoid canker sores.
Numbing medication is not used. Soreness can range between 1-5 days. ( each patient's experience is different) The soreness is caused by "loosening of the teeth". This happens because the teeth will begin to move.
Follow-up visits for adjustments will follow.

I dont have them and never have, i've seen how they take them off though. so im guessing you sit down, they clean your teeth and what not, them put the glue on, stick on the bracets and then put on the wire, then every month or less you go and get them tightened. They hurt at first and the can cut your gums to get the wax stuff. They also hurt when you get them tightened. Good Luck, you'll have great teeth in the end! :)
