Currently 4th year medical student- curious about peoples attitude to shaved heads. I've shaved mine in the summer before but I'd quite like to do it all the time. Would it bother you being seen by a bald medical student if they were wearing white coat, shirt tie etc

As a nurse it really doesn't bother me seeing a bald medical student provided they maintain their professionalism in their practice and conduct. Competence and effective strategies in having good relationship with clients and staff count more than the physical looks.
Nevertheless, as a personal opinion in general, you have at least to know yourself of how you look like being bald. Being bald turns out to look differently as viewed by different individuals. I mean some would look good, may look more attractive and appealing, may appear cute, etc. but may possibly look awful or incompatible to your general looks as well. So suit yourself. One thing I know of: most children would prefer someone with hair so if by chance you will be assigned in pediatrics unit, better keep out from being bald.

If you were otherwise well-groomed, a shaved head is acceptable, but I think many people would feel more comfortable if you had a standard haircut. Feelings are not always logical.

Two personal comments: I get grossed out by people with pierced lips, noses, tongues, etc. working in the food service industry. Yuck.

During the seventies, there were many hippie residents and students whose appearance was bizarre. They made patients and parents very uncomfortable with their unkempt hair, open shirts, hairy chests, psychedelic jewelry, and wrinkled clothes. If I were chief of staff I would have thrown them off the service. Most of them are now well ensconced in upper class homes, belong to country clubs and vote straight Republican.

Guess I'll get several thumbs down on this one.

I wouldn't as long as you seemed competent.

Many people value a conservative appearance in professionals because they either reason or intuit that conservative appearance suggests conservative (i.e. careful, thoughtful) action, which they certainly desire in a medical provider.

Lots of people shave their heads, drive bikes and get tattoos and piercings. But for a Physician, Square/Dork = trust.
On the other hand, an alternative appearance might work to gain the confidence of emergency patients (because they are more likely to lead a less dorky lifestyle and get injured doing their drugs and shenanigans)

If you want to make sure not to raise anyones eyebrows, then you must be the same as the lowest common denominator, stylistically. Ergo, uberDork.

It shouldn't matter what the Doctor looks like, as long as he/she has a decent bed side manner and knows what they are doing! Bring on the baldy!
Far too often Doctors seem to have a superior attitude not only to patients but also to other staff members, you are all there to provide the same service, Patient care.

It's not really a problem... it's what's in your head that counts!

Jinx, what's wrong with a shaved head Doc Martens? Admittedly, I gave the boots up years ago, but the shoes are comfy and last ages.

Doesn't make a sense.
A Bald Medical Student does not bother me for one reason that the character will indicate if you are scientifically and emotionally blade or not.
Got it or not!!!!!!!!
Why don't you study rather than asking about your appearance in that way?

Anyone of reasonable intellect is going to know that you didn't get as far as you have by being a thug / dim, so it won't bother them.

Anyone really ill isn't going to care WHO stops the pain.

Anyone stupid enough to care / not ill enough to overlook it, should not be bothering you anyway and is better off out of the gene pool!

I don` t think it would bother me. In my opinion it is important when a person behaves politely and looks smart in his/her profession. A bald head could be even natural...

wow. that's nice. it's good to see some people willing to show their personality and not conform to the typcial sterile hospital "personality."

well...i'm in the 25-34 age bracket, and i wouldn't mind being treated by a [younger] (voluntarily) bald doctor--as long as you carry yourself professionally and are able to communicate your knowledge, everything will be fine.
