* My opinion - Getting rid of illegal immigrants would ultimately cost less in the long run than paying $8.00 for an apple.

I would have no problem picking fruit, plowing my own hay, cleaning my own house and toilets, mowing my own lawn, cleaning up after others, cleaning out horse manure, etc. I've done these all myself.

Billions of dollars are being spent annually to house illegals in prisons, pay for their healthcare, etc.

I would rather pay more for fruit.
Because the cost of housing would go way down due to less of a demand for it.
There would be more jobs on the job market such as Construction work,Factory work and retail work etc.
It's a myth that the illegals do jobs that American's don't want to do but it's true that they take jobs away from us.
The cost of Medical Services would go way,way down as most of the people who never pay their doctor bills would be gone and the hospitals wouldn't be making us pay for it instead.
Gas prices would go back down to normal as there would be less of a demand for it.
The Schools would benefit from it as well and so would our students as the ever increasing number of students that have overloaded our School system would no longer be a factor.
Crime would decrease and the amount of illegal drugs that's flooding our streets which are brought in by the illegals wouldn't be an issue anymore.
Premuims for automobile insurance would go down as we would not have to pay for all of the accidents caused by the illegals and instead would only have to pay for American citizens who drive uninsured and cause accidents.
Besides they just invented a machine that picks the fruit and vegetables without the assistance of humans so the excuse we need them to do that for us is no longer valid.
Legal migration and coming her legally benefits America but illegal aliens who break our laws and spit in our face only hurts us and it is not racist to make a statement based upon facts.
So if paying more for fruit is the price I have to pay to improve everything else then I'm more than willing to do it.

I would also like to add that right now in the nearby Safeway supermarket there are big containers of strawberries rotting on the shelves because no one wants to pay $9.99 for a large container of strawberries.
The smaller containers cost $5.99 each and those are rotting quite nicely too.
I also witness people looking at the fruit, see how much it costs, then they will go look at some other kind of fruit, see how much it costs then eventually leave without buying any fruit at all.
The farmers still have their illegals harvesting for them so what's their excuse for it being so expensive right now?

Since only 2 of the illegal immigrants actually PICK fruit, I fail to see how booting their sorry a$$es out of my country will cause an irrational inflation in the cost of oranges (I don't eat them anyway, I'm allergic to citric acid.)

I'd gladly pay $15 per fruit to be rid of the illegals. But then, some of us are REALLY smart and will just plant our own fruits and vegetables. Support the SMALL farmers!!

For some reason, there are a few odd people who actually think the American society somehow depends on the "contributions" (and I use that word VERY loosely) of criminals to survive. Either you're not a born-and-raised American, or you've been living under a rock. Americans are stubborn, independent people who will find a way to get what they need, LEGALLY.

Oh yes I'd be more than willing to pay more for fruit...but you also have to take a look on some of the things that some of these people said, drugs would still be a problem, 'cause there's still some that gets over the borders or is made here, we would have to pay less for medical and auto insurance, ect. ect. But I'm a high school student and I don't nessasarily see any true defucnts in my school due to illegal immigration, other than us having to learn a different language...and that some Spanish-speakers talk in it whenever they can (nothing bad but I still think that they should at least try and talk English) there are other problems in our school system that I'd reather not bring into an illegal immigration discussion...but I will still pay more for an orange than to have the effects of people crossing the boarder illegally.

The cost of labor in the price of fruit is only about 5%. So if a apple cost a dollar only 5 cents goes to pay for the labor. So even if you double the pay of the guy picking the fruit and pay him a real wage the cost of the apple would be $1.10. Yeah, I would pay an extra dime so that citizens/legal immigrants could work the fields and get paid a real wage and then illegal aliens can be deported.

I would rather pay more for fruit....even if it was considerably more.

I think this is somewhat of a false dilemma however...
Have you been to the grocery and purchased fruit or veggies recently? At least here in Texas it is very difficult to get such that is grown in the United States. Produce prices may increase a small amount, but there will be no sudden lack of fruit and veggies from our store shelves (those prices are set on supply and demand...and Mexico and South America are providing most of the supply nowadays).

The costs of illegal immigration are incredible...it is likely to bankrupt the nation, and destroy education, healthcare, and social services. I would pay MUCH more for fruit to see that end.

We have 12 - 18 million illegal immigrants in the US and farmers still can't seem to find people to pick the fruit, why is this? Because it is back breaking labor for low wages.

Illegal immigrants, just like US workers, will take the first opportunity to get out of the fields. In the case of the illegal immigrant it is into the construction business and factories. Guess that blows the whole "jobs Americans wont do" theory out of the water..... Farmers will ALWAYS have trouble finding workers because they pay low wages for back breaking labor.

I will pay the higher price for the fruit, it keeps raising anyway....

Migrant farm workers have serviced this country for decades upon decades. Without them, many of us would likely find ourselves not having to worry so much about the cost of produce but rather, where to find it, as it would most likely remain rotting in our fields.

If you are going to attempt deriding the current immigration bill, you should start by choosing a different angle, enlighten yourself with the amnesty bills of previous administrations and also, the history and facts concerning who is and always has been responsible for putting produce upon our tables.

God Bless our illegal farmworkers. They account for a very small percentage of illegals and are not the root of the problem you are concerned about. If you or, anyone is going to trash Bush's bill, pick another subject to play off of because anyone who knows anything about our illegal farmworkers will not buy into your analogy.

Paying more for fruit and veggies.

Immigration, in and of itself, is not a bad thing. On strictly theoretical terms, the ability to consider labor as a commodity is positive -- immigrants can come in and fill jobs that enable natives to move up to higher paying, higher caliber jobs. And workers can be traded among nations -- Mexicans might come here, while some Americans might go to Mexico for jobs.

But that assumes that there are those higher quality jobs in the first place, and that the native population is capable of filling them. And that there are comparable jobs in other nations to accept our exported workers.

The problem is that we are being flooded with folks who come here and suck up federal "entitlements" dollars, but don't pay any taxes, while there is no flow in the opposite direction. The illegal aliens take, but don't contribute. That means my taxes increase to pay for folks who are not paying their fair share. And I pay higher health insurance premiums to cover hospital costs for those who won't can't pay, and higher car insurance premiums, and . . . and . . . and . . .

It has been a tradition for generations and has been legally done. The whole illegal problem has to be stopped. I would pay more for fruit if that is what it takes. If we can dump our ill and unemployed on the streets here in America the why can't we just take them home. Maybe we should give them a big mark on their skin for the second offense you know like a big red dot or something. If you see that call a cop and they will take them back to Mexico.

As long as it's on written legal form. I personally would love to be your fruit supplier! Shoot, I'd grow them apples myself at eight bucks each! That's almost like flipping illegal drugs at that price!

Now to take things a bit farther. Can we as well do the same for the educators of this country? Or must we continue having a dropout rate that constantly keeps increasing for leaving the under privileged to teach themselves for cutting the pie in non-equal slices?!
