If you are out for most of the summer in the sun with constant sunscreen on... then you will gradually become darker. But if you are only out for a little bit with sunscreen, then no. Granted it is much safer to wear sunscreen... it is harder to get a tan... especially if the SPF is high Hope this helps! :)

Tanning is the body's way of trying to prevent sun damage. I work with a dermatologist and see so many people come in with localized skin cancers from years of tanning. Sunscreen is adding chemicals to block the absorption of the UVA/UVB rays that do the damage, the higher the SPF factor the longer it takes to have teh same amount of damage occur.... ie if you normally burn in 10 minutes, using SPF 15 you can be in the sun for 15 times longer. A deep tan from the sun is not healthy and indicates major skin damage. If you want to be darker, try some of the sunless sprays or self tanners.

Sorry, yes. Which is a good thing, tanning will eventually make you look older if you do it all the time. And, honestly, I am amazed at how many people seriously believe that you can use SPF and get a tan. NO!!! That's the POINT of spf.

p.s.--- I have never EVER heard someone say 'cancer-free tan'. That is NOT a guarantee.

If you're getting a tan, the sunscreen isn't working. You either aren't using a high enough SPF, aren't putting it on correctly, aren't putting on enough, or not putting it on often enough.

EDIT: There is no such thing as a "cancer free tan"!!!!!!! Tanning is your body's skin cells being DAMAGED -- Damaged to the point that their DNA structure is changing and more melanin is being produced. Look at the word "melanoma"...see any connection here? When you mess with the melanin producing cells, you are ASKING for skin cancer. Don't be stupid. Stop trying to get tan.

It doesn't completely keep you from tanning..it just makes it a little harder to tan.

If you want to tan and not get burnt, use a lower SPF...like 10 or 15

so no, it just makes it a little more difficult =]

Using sunscreen actually gives you a better and longer tan because it prevents the bad UV rays from burning you. It does allow the good Uv's in to give you a tan.

not it doesn't it protects your skin from burning. Go to www.thebettertan.com. That is where i work and we know all about it. It is best to use a sun screen. The more you burn the more likely you are to get skin cancer. If you want to get tan use a low spf. I would start around maybe 8 and work your way down, depending on where you are and your skin type, but sun screen it good for you.
