I think the problems started when they decided that people didn't have to go to state sanctioned schools. Americans are becoming less and less educated, and with a rise in ignorance, comes a rise in bigotry. Everything that presidents from Lincoln on til Kennedy have tried to achieve has been eroded by Nixon, Regan and the Bushes. I truly think that the only hope for America lies in Hilary Clinton being elected.( I'm Canadian, by the way)

In the definition of "bigotry", there are two ideas: 1) That distinct groups of people exist, and 2) that this distinction warrants the abuse of a particular group. How one group usually abuses another group is by denying them their human rights. That's sort of a mouthful, but here's the cheese: We still have "bigotry" because we deny the human rights of our children in our schools. They are learning that human rights are not guaranteed for all humans. It is being taught by the way we teach. This is the 2) in the definition of "bigotry" above. All we need is a new way to teach that upholds the participant's human rights.

A Christian fundamentalist is simply someone who believes the Bible is truth, and tries to live it every day. It is a myth that we are trying to force America to conform to the Bible's standards. Bigotry begins, usually, with a stereotype or misconception about a group of people. Don't allow yourself to fall into that trap by believing wrong things about the US and Christians.

This really depends on exactly where in the United States you are, some places are more tolerant than others. There is bigotry all around the world, it's not just isolated to the United States.

That is an excellent question. Political pandering to the Christian right is driving this country back to the 17th century. I do think the tide is changing, and there will be a backlash to the Christian agenda.

I understand completely. I am sorry you have to see this ugly side of America. We fail on many levels as a society. We allow corporate greed to divide us, to hold so many of us down. We have allowed the wealthy to take over at every level. keeping us divided along along the lines of race, religion, economic and sexual orientation helps them to maintain their position of power. Religion is just a convenient tool for them to dupe our gullible citizenry. Oil is more important than education, health care, economic security. War keeps the oil flowing. Blood is expendable. Profit and Power are the Gods of America.

Pride and arrogance... Religion has a place in politics but our country has blown it out of proportion and has little balance..It was once greater then it is now..I fear where it is headed with disapointment..
If you know anything about the bible you can see that spirtuality had everything to do with politics then...Great women and men of God ruled in high places of authority....

Ah, my dear, we're not all like that. Unfortunately, the majority of those in political power ARE..
I'm not sure where you're visiting, but there are some very nice places with wonderful people who are not like what you describe.
The U.S. has its problems, that's for sure.. but it's my home and I love it.. warts and all.. we'll work on ours.. I'm sure you feel the same way about your country too.
Blessings..

Dear be nicee: I am glad that you have decided to visit our country and I hope that you continue to enjoy it--food, sites, people. Bigotry, on the other hand, is an overused term by those who hate truth, mainly, God. You see, God created the world and established laws by which we should live in order to enjoy our lives and our environment as well as an intimate relationship with him. In time, however, some begin to love disobey and even to love their corrupt way. God, being the father that he is, offered consequences for our sins and blessings for our obedience in his infinite wisdom and love for us. Nevertheless, many refuse him and also those who speak in his behalf. They go as far as to call them "bigots."
Living a Godly life is a choice just as living in sin and paying the price. That what the fuzz is all about. You may not agree with me, but let me tell you that I love you and treasure you for the rational human being that God created you to be.
Sincerely,
Mr. M on "bigotry."

You need to inform yourself on America and its history before asking silly questions.
America was settled, founded and is predominantly populated by Christians. As such our culture is steeped in Christian beliefs. We are becoming more secular, but are still quite a religious people.
So, religion doesn't interfere with anything. It is part of what we are. Virtually every president has prayed in their official position. We have "in God we trust" on our money. The Supreme Court opens with acknowledgement of God. You may not be familiar or comfortable with that, but we don't need your comfort or approval. Come here and enjoy what you will and keep your criticism to your own govt.
And you talk of bigotry. We have much of it here as they do around the world. I see much bigotry against people of faith lately. Your "question" borders on that. It also exhibits intolerance and ignorance.
To the "thumbs down" folks, did I say something historically inaccurate? or do you just not like that what I said is true?
