Cooking for 40 can be a daunting task, especially with grilling homemade burgers: you might want to go with some GOOD QUALITY PRE FORMED BURGERS, LIKE FROM COSTCO, or Smart and Final, I've had some sirloin burgers from S&F that were "doctored"up and were delicious, but here's the math for you if you insist on doing it yourself: FIRST OF ALL, PORTION CONTROL FOR THIS IS GOING A *****must*****.........
1 pound of meat will make 4, 4 ounce patties (4x4 is 16, the number of ounces in a pound of meat) :
you have 40 people, so 40 divided by 4 is 10 pounds of burger meat, but that's NOT taking into account that some people will eat 2 burgers, and some (might) be veggies, so they won't be partaking in the meat side of your buffet......It's always better to have too much than not enough, as we cater on the side, and 2 things that can ruin a party is running out of
1) ice and booze and 2) running out of food..........Let us know what you decided to do and how things turn out!!!! So, just to be on the safe side, I'd make 12-15 lbs of burger patties, and the leftovers can be used in a variety of ways: Tacos, Burritos, Sloppy Joes, you get the picture!!!

WOW that's alot of work. I hope you have friends coming early to assist you in preparing the hamburgers. Have you considered a assembly line? I would think that 12-15 lbs would be enough. I'd rather to much than not enough. What are you planning to serve with your great hamburgers?

10-12 pounds will do it. Burgers that size will be slightly over the standard 1/4 pound, even with the stuffing added in, so I'd go with 12 pounds. If there are left overs, they freeze beautifully.

Extra-Crusty Baked Rigatoni with Beef Ragù Few meals are as comforting as a pan of baked pasta. Using rigatonilarge ridged tubesgives you the pleasure of lasagna with less work. Ingredients: * 1 lb. rigatoni * 2 Tbs. olive oil, plus more as needed * 1 yellow onion, chopped * 2 garlic cloves, chopped * 1 ground beef * 1/2 cup chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley * 1 Tbs. dried oregano * 1 large can (28 oz.) peeled and chopped tomatoes * 1 cup heavy cream or milk * Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste * 1/2 lb. shredded mozzarella cheese * 1 cup grated Parmesan or aged Asiago cheese Directions: Preheat an oven to 350ºF. Bring a large pot two-thirds full of salted water to a boil. Add the rigatoni, stir well and cook until al dente (tender but firm to the bite), about 15 minutes or according to the package instructions. Drain the rigatoni, place in a large bowl and toss with a little olive oil to prevent sticking. Set aside. In the same pot, heat the 2 Tbs. olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook, stirring, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the beef and cook, stirring to break up the meat, until no pink remains, about 10 minutes. Drain off any fat. Add the parsley, oregano and tomatoes and stir well. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer, uncovered, until the tomatoes break down and the flavors have melded, about 20 minutes. Stir in the cream, raise the heat and return to a boil. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. Return the rigatoni to the pot with the sauce and toss to coat well. Oil the bottom of a shallow 3-quart baking dish. Spread half of the pasta mixture in the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with half of the mozzarella. Top with the remaining pasta, the remaining mozzarella and the Parmesan. Bake until the sauce is bubbly and the top is crusty and golden brown, about 35 minutes. Remove from the oven, let stand for about 5 minutes and serve. Serves 6.

are they ladies, men or both?
men will probably eat 2 burgers while women will eat one so I'd say 15 lbs that should give you about 60 1/4 pound burgers.
