Your problem is you are coming back under Law by imposing rules upon yourself which God has not imposed on you.
Whenever we try to live up to a system of "Do's and Don't's", we come back under a "works righteousness mentality", and try to earn God's approval by keeping a set of laws. If you seek to walk in faith and love and just keep filled with the Holy Spirit, He will wean you away from every negative influence in your life in His own time.
Grace and Law are mutually exclusive.
God accepts us on the basis of faith alone.
When we try to add to this self imposed rules, we are trying to earn what we can only receive as a gift through faith.
"There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"
Romans 8:1

Hey!
I can so relate to you somewhat.
Before I became a true Believer all i would listen to was anything Rock, and 80s music and what not...
Anytime I heard Christian music or the praise songs at church, when I started going, I would feel uncomfortable. I wasnt used to hearing the word God or Jesus in a song and it bugged me. Then my friend dared me to listen to our local christian station for 1 week and see if i liked it. And I got HOOKED! I cant stop listening. And yes I still listen to other Secular bands and what not. I may not feel as guilty as you, but I try not to let the words get to me (in the song)
I feel bad that you are feeling guilty. Maybe it is God saying that you need to stop and just listen to Christian music. But i must say I love me some 80s music...lol And I cant really give it up.
Well Im here for ya :)
And music is an amazing thing that I know many love

You are simply experiencing a common problem among Christians-losing your balance. Ecclesiastes 7:16-18 cautions us to not become righteous or wicked overmuch. Remember that it is only music that features things God condemns that is inappropriate to listen to.(Ephesians 5:3, 4)On the other hand, neither should we ever lower our standards and listen to bad music. Remember that the melody as well as the words matter. Does the melody reflect good or bad things? (Galatians 5:19-23). Remember that a Christian is reasonable and moderate in habits. (Titus 3:2; 2:2) Listening to only Christian music is a personal choice. Being reasonable and moderate will keep us from saying that other types of music are wrong and will help us not to feel guilty if we listen to them.

I can relate!
I love 60 psychodelic music, I grew up on it! I also try to spend most of my time listening to praise and worship music, it does lift my soul and keep my mind in a Godly way.
Our actions come from our thoughts and if we have Godly thoughts we will have Godly actions.
Remeber, guilt is not an emotion that comes from God. The "evil one" is the voice that will have you believe you are not worthy.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit will convict me if I am heading in the wrong direction but he never makes me feel guilty.
Joyce Meyers book "The Battlefield of the Mind" is really good for helping us to recognize the devils voice and help to stomp it out.
Anyway, back to the original question. Don't let the devil make you feel unworthy.
You should continually pray, praise and worship and if your heart is right with God a little Jefferson Airplane's not gunna kill ya.
Just remember that others may be looking to you in your walk with Christ, we do have a resposibility to represent Him well.
Love and prayers to you!

I know exactly what you're talking about!!! Last year, I used to listen to nothing but rap and hip hop and it infected my mind. I didn't even feel the change that was destroying me and my relationship with God. Then I switched to nothing but Christian and I felt so much better. I had no idea how bad in shape I was before i returned to God. I got bored of Christian music after a while, but i was able to stop myself from switching to rap by listening to diff christian artists. My favorte is Toby Mac, Jeremy Camp, and the Newsboys. Try finding some Christian music that you can get addicted on! It helps.
I too feel guilty when i listen to a rap song every once in a while! Crazy... Luv to chat with ya more! Here's my Email: ldpuffdaddy@yahoo.com You don't have to email me but i find this conversation really interesting and would love to talk about it more! God Bless!!

Hi, I also listen to a lot of Chirstian music myself. I don't think you should feel guilty for listening to other types of music but if you are feeling guilty, maybe God is trying to tell you that the kind of music you are now listening to is not the right kind of music. I would pray about it if I was you and if you keep on feeling guilty, I wouldn't listen to that music anymore because it sounds like God doesn't want you to.

I listen to non-christian music, too. You just have to be aware of what might not be God-honoring for the Christian to listen to. I was a teenager in the 70's, and I love to listen to that style of music still. But sometimes I have to just change the station due to lyrics that are questionable. Don't feel guilty. Just be wise!!

God is not interested in you feeling guilty. Being a Christian doesn't require you to listen to a certain type of music. Anyone telling you this is mistaken. Pursue your positive thoughts in music and many other ways, but don't worry if you enjoy listening to other forms of music at times. No problem!

In the mid-60's I got involved, deeply involved in a church that taught that any secular music was bad, and rock & roll was downright sinful, literally leading the world to Hell. For example,
Bob Larson, a famous evangelist at the time, called rock & roll "The Devil's Diversion" in his book. He actually said the Beatles were teaching people to worship non-Christians (in his words) to prepare us all to worship the anti-Christ, who was sure to make himself known any day. He got kids to smash tens, maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of records by such "evil people" as Elvis, the Beach Boys and the Four Seasons, while they shouted "hallelujah" and "witnessed" to how free they felt now that Satan's grip on them had been broken.
The follow up to this story is that Bob Larson went on to manage rock groups himself once he found out how much money was in it (Christian rock groups that were playing the same "jungle rhythm" - his words - that he preached against). Nowadays he's casting out demons & will teach you how to too, for only $5,000.
Today we know that Elvis was really a great singer, and that the Beatles made some great music and were not evil or satanic at all.
I can't tell you how many times I and my friends felt guilty for having listened to such "evil" music. And all that guilt and shame for nothing.
If you truly, in your heart, want to listen only to Christian music, then that is what you should do. However, it seems to me that if this was your true feelings, that you would never have listened to any music besides Christian music.
As someone who lived for many years with a lot of unjustified guilt and shame, my advice to you would be this: If you, yourself, for your own reasons, want to listen only to Christian music, then do so. But listening to other music is not a sin in any way, nor is it anything to feel guilty about. Do not let anyone else tell you what you should listen to or not listen to, and definitely do not allow anyone else to put a guilt-trip on you because you are not doing what THEY think you should.
Good luck in your continued journey toward the truth!

Guilt is something the devil tries to heap on you. I don't know what type of music you listen to, now. But if it's 60's psychadelic, that won't send you to hell. There isn't any more condemnation for those who have placed their trust in Christ. His blood has set you free. Be free, then, in His Spirit. I personally like old school R & B, but it doesn't hinder my walk with God. Sometimes, it's refreshing, because I don't have to get so into the theology of secular R & B. With Christian music, I'm always looking to see if the doctrine is Biblical.
I just don't like the new hip-hop and R & B stuff. They ain't talkin' 'bout nuthin in them songs.
