It is an aural hematoma. It is caused by trauma to the ear leather. It needs to be drained and treated by a vet, but it is not life threatening. Something as simple as shakinghis head too vigrously or hitting the ear against a hard object can cause it, but most I have seen are caused by a playmate biting the ear while playing.

Is it something on the ear or the ear itself? The earflaps could become damaged and fill with blood--this is called an aural hematoma. The 2 sides of the ear separate and fill with fluid. It feels like a pillow or water balloon. If this is what has happened (from the dog shaking his head usually), it will need surgery to fix. It is uncomfortable but not an emergency. Have your vet check it out.

could also be a haematoma, if he's knocked it or been playing rough can happen. my last dog did this a few time, vet used a syringe to drain it, and at least one time he had antibiotics. see the vet . .

Could be a blood cyst, nothing to overly panic about but you do need to take him to the vets so they can lance it. It can get infected if he scratches it so best pop to them asap.

It could be a tick inside! Go to your vet right away to check it out! or maybe it is a zip in the dogs ear? If the dog is limping, or growls when you touch it.. It is most likely a tick!
