I am attending classes during the day and working the midnight shift five days a week. Besides taking Hoodia and gulping down mountain dew, what can I do to give myself a kick?

I have the answer for you. you will need something called "khat" or "gat". it is a very legal Herb that will give you a fantastic kick.
we use it when we have exams..it makes you focused and full of energy. it's sort of a green leave.. the dry kind is better. you find it in African shops.. my friends at work stopped drinking coca cola and v drinks because of gat.it can actually make you very fit as well. and it is not addictive at all, you can eat it only when you feel like it.
best of luck.
Peace.

Sleeping every chance you get, avoiding alcohol, drinking 64oz of water a day, eating small frequent meals/snacks with adequate protein (about 10-20 gms per meal) and making sure you're taking a good multivitamin will help.
Caffeine, sugar and herbals will only delay the inevitable and may allow you to put yourself in a compromising position when you crash, (like being behind the wheel of a car - pun intentional.) No matter how old you are, you need a certain amount of uninterrupted sleep to survive and be successful.

BTW - "to maintain a burst of energy" "throughout (your) busy day" is an oxymoron.
