I know this is a really weird question but I have so far found two really disgusting things in my house.

First I found a smear on my couch pillow (it's an off-white pillow) that was brown, and smelled really disgusting.

Then yesterday I was sitting in my leather computer chair with the dog on my lap and he started licking something in my lap. I looked down and there was a small puddle of this disgusting brown liquid-gel type stuff with the same really horrible smell.

So what I want to know is - what color is a dog's ejaculate? I can't think of anything else this could be. I did check his belly area and his rear to see if there was any residue and there wasn't at all and he hadn't throw up or anything so I have no idea what this stuff is. It has a really foul smell to it.

He's just at the age where he has started humping things (he was sleeping at the time though...) so I'm wondering if that's what it could be.

Sorry, I know this is really gross.

He hasn't been scooting his rear on the floor and hasn't shown any signs of irritation. It was a REALLY bad smell, I wouldn't describe it as a fishy smell but it was bad enough to make me gag. So the anal gland thing seems right. Should I take him to the vet if he doesn't seem bothered by it or is it normal?

Okay I just made ANOTHER vet appointment (we've been having a lot lately!) for my dog to have his bootie squeezed. That's really gross.. but thanks everyone for your help! I really appreciate it.

Good luck at the vet. Have them teach you how to do it and you can take care of it at home.

Dogs (and cats) have 2 glands just inside their rectums commonly called anal sacs or anal glands. They secrete a stinky liquid (like dead fish smell is the best way to describe it) when they have a bowel movement. Sometimes, more often in little dogs, the sacs get impacted with thick material instead of watery material, and they become uncomfortable. The dog will drag his butt on the ground or lick back there in an attempt to empty them. Sometimes they will leak if they are overly full. They can also express these glands when frightened. Your vet or groomer can easily express them for you.

It sounds like it is the stuff that is excreted from a dog's anal glands (which are located in the dog's anus). Have you noticed the dog licking his rear or scooting on the carpet? Usually, a dog naturally excretes the anal glands when they poop. Sometimes they will express them when they are nervous or upset though. Also, sometimes, they can be blocked (which is not the case for you if you are finding the juice on things) and need to be expressed by your vet or groomer.

If it his coming from his male private area, there is a serious problem. I'm guessing it's coming from the other end however. Maybe he stepped in it, or it got stuck on his rear after he pottied. When you mention the smell, it makes me think about their anal glands. If he is leaking from that area, he needs to have his glands 'squeezed'. Should probably take him in for a vet visit. :)

A dogs ejaculate is a clear off white.Sounds like your pets anal glands need to be expressed by a vet or groomer.

Sounds like anal gland expression, semen is off white/white in dogs just like people. Anal gland expression is very smelly, one must be careful emptying them. I put my toy breeds in the tub so it shoots out on the tub and they get their butts washed. If you do not want to empty them have a vet do it as he will start dragging his rear on your carpet..lol.just like Toby in the carpet cleaning commercial. Dogs anal glands empty when they poop so you may need to change his food if he is having a problem or add fiber such as PURE pumpkin, or Metamucil type stuff.

Was it a horrid fishy smell?? If it was it's his anal glands leaking their fluid. You'll need to get your dog into your vets and have them check the anal glands and have them completely emptied. It is so gross, and the smell is even worse.

Sounds to me,, like his anal glands are impacted and leaking. He needs to have them expressed by a vet. It's not really that expensive to have done!

Is he scooting his butt on the ground?

His anal glands could be infected or blocked. You can get a groomer or vet to express them. Or do it yourself once you know how. Here's a link to more info:

I am almost positive, without being there, that your dog's anal glands have expressed themselves, and probably need more vet attention.
