Hmm, I personally like the South Beach Diet. It was pretty simple. One thing I'd suggset getting is The Beck Diet Book (or something similarily named). It helps you focus on losing weight, and gives you a really good insight into dieting and staying healthy for the rest of your life.

No "diet" is good for losing weight, unless you just want to regain it all.
Exercise and getting the crap food out of your meals will cause weight loss. That type of food includes fat and sugars. Eliminate fats and sugars and exercise.
Just 20 min. of walking each day, that raises your heart-rate...not a slow stroll, is exercise enough to start with. It can gradually be increased.
Read Dr. Phil's book on weight loss. It's easier than you think.

The best "diet' is not a short term program to lose weight it actually involves changes in the way you eat every day. Cut the fat out of your menu, drink plenty of water, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, stick to lean cuts of meat and try to exercise a little every day.

find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)
