an ingrown toenail causes the tissues around the nail to swell and redden, doesn't change the color of the nail at all. It hurts like crazy, and often has to be cut out by a doctor. My great toes were so bad, I had the nails completely removed rather than go thru the pain of having the ingrown portions removed every three months. If your nail is discolored, you likely just stubbed your toe badly without realizing, and the discoloration will stay until the nail has grown out and the dicoloration with it. The discomfort can last for up to two months because the nail bed itself is bruised. Only time will heal that, keep your nails trimmed.

It is usually very painful and tender to the touch. I don't remember it being bruised though. It was just really red and swollen. If you suspect you have one you can try cutting a V shape out of the end of the toenail. That way when the nail continues to grow, the nail will kind of be able to grow in a direction other than under your skin.

I had one sort of. I let my toenail grow too long, and instead of keeping the nail straight and square, I cut mine rounded (wrong thing to do.) It caused an infection on my foot with a little bubble on the corner of my toe near the nail. I didn't have brusing under my nail though. I got a prescription for antibiotics and that cleared it up.

It is painful, red, inflamed, and can appear bruised under the nail. Generally speaking, it usually requires surgery to get the nail out, this is an in office procedure, costs under 500dollars.

well if its ingrown it will cause an infection, if you get that to go away chances are good that it will grow out again :) i had it myself a few days ago and i taped an end of a plaster to the skin at the ingrown side, and then I pulled the skin away as hard as I could and fixed the other plaster end th hold :) it worked real good! good luck ;)

If you have one, do what Carmen D said. Also helps to keep the area clean. Don't wear shoes for a while if you can get away with it.
