since cursing is worse then most people think (evidant by the reaction of more innocent people) and their words do harm, is it possible that their are hidden words of power with horrible consequences?

I don't think so. Words are words-- they are sounds we make, they are arbitrary with no inherent meaning of their own.

What, like Muad'dib?

Cursing (like all language) is more or less completely arbitrary. It's a social convention - the 'worst' curse words in Quebecker French are words relating to the Catholic sacraments; the terrible ones in Xhosa are mostly nonsense phrases, and the ones in English are related to the things that come out of certain orifices (or the names of the orifices themselves).

Words do harm only insofar as the emotions and desires of the speaker come through. If I were to swear extensively at a person who spoke no English whatsoever, and kept my tone of voice sweet, do you think that person would have any idea what was going on?

It is possible to do harm to others without realizing it. Cursing is a direct offensive towards a person. But sometimes we say things to others which to us might seem innocent. We don't know the heart of a person or his mind so that's why we have to think twice before saying anything. It's easy to distinguish a joke in person and on-line we have to be especially careful and remember that respect is key. It's also all about intention, if your intention is to be sarcastic, it's obviously wrong. It's all about sense and sensibility.

Dost thou not see how Allah sets forth a parable of a good word? It is like a good tree, whose root is firm and whose branches reach into heaven.

And the case of an evil word, is like that of an evil tree, which is uprooted from above the earth and has no stability.

Words only hurt because we allow ourselves to be hurt by them.
