I've been running in cross country for 2 weeks now and I have shin splints and they really hurt! Is there anything to relieve it? I've already tried putting ice

Shin splints are the direct result of too much stress on your body. Make sure to keep a running log and write down your distance run each day with your time plus anything that hurts. You may need to know how long something has hurt and a written record is great for that.

Once you know your workout plan for he last two weeks, you need to take a couple days off then procedd at a lower pace and shorter ditance. Once you can run without pain for a few weeks, the shins should strengthen enough.

Also, do you have good running shoes? Target brand shoes don't count! Really, you need to try on the big name brands, my favorites being New Balance and Asics (I also liked Brooks and Adidas).

Also Ice a few times a day for 10 minutes each is good. Alleve is my favorite anti-inflammatory (a.k.a. Naproxin, Wal-Proxin). Massage is good, too, to get the blood moving through them.
P.S. I do not run on grass; it's an uneven surface with holes here and there and can throws me off and strains my knees. Hard packed dirt or a real track would be best.

Shin splints are caused by muscle imbalance. Calf strong, shin weak. The way to correct this is to strengthen the muscles at the front of the legs. Lie face down in bed with your toes hanging over the edge. Pull your toes upward against the resistance of the mattress. Try to work up to 3 or 4 sets of 5 – 10 reps each. Good Luck

Shin splints are absolutly horrible, this is what I usually did when I had them:

ICE A LOT. icing is very important.
also freeze water in like a dixie cup and then masage it on your legs it feels amazing.

ON THE DAY OF A MEET take advil. It'll help with the inflamation and pain a little bit.

DO EXERSICES LIKE slowly twirling your ankle.

Good luck, hope this helps you!! :)

Ice everyday for 20 minutes.

Run every other day for 15-20 minutes on the GRASS. Avoid doing too much too fast.

Always stretch before your runs.
