so why is it so unthinkable that the soul (or the spirit) is eternal?

If you consider the soul is composed of pure energy would it not out last the body and continue it's existance separated from the body?

Just because we have not learned how to detect soul energy yet does not mean it doesn't exist. Not too long ago we couldn't detect microwaves, radiation or infared light either.

With regard to the use of the soul could not the soul energy give life to the body itself and be the root of the animation of the body? The real life giver?

It's not unthinkable. It is actually perfectly logical. Those who don't believe it won't be convinced by your argument though.

It isn't unthinkable for most, just extremely unlikely. Energy is a form of matter, and we can detect all matter we know about thus far (I wouldn't say we quite "know about" the higgs boson yet). So to say you have pure energy that is undetectable seems silly, and to say that what we are is a soul, which has nothing to do with a bunch of interactions in our brain which determine our thoughts, memories, and behavior, seems even worse.

It isn't the idea that such a soul could exist that's the problem, it's giving it some kind of use in the self that isn't already covered by other things that is....

From the point of view of a logical person who does not have any beliefs unless theyre proven to exist, the soul is not scientifically proven.

Thus theres a big gap there in knowledge.

How does a soul exist? Does it truly exist? What does it do? etc. These things are currently outside the boundaries of science.

Maybe someday it will be proven.

But until then, lets just leave it as a belief that doesnt really have any basis but belief itself.

No wonder God SAID, "Let there be light and there was light."

God spoke things into existence and that is how He created. The Bible says that "out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast...." Genesis 2:19 and He said, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground..." Genesis 2:7

I guess since matter just changes form and everything is energy that God spoke and matter formed. The Bible says God is Spirit and a consuming fire. God uses Jesus to communicate with man. God the Father would burn up man.
However, God makes it clear that He, not the sun, is the earth's Creator, and that God is not dependent upon the sun either for the earth's material substance or for the sustaining of life. The sun and the moon are not the 2 great lights of the universe. God created a functioning and mature creation. From those mature people, plants and animals that had the seed in them, their offspring came.

Judges 10:16 "And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served the Lord: and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel."

The verse above says "the soul was grieved." Sounds like the conscience could no longer endure the misery.

Don't fool yourself Ma'm. Its created by an all Eternal God. That is why every thing that He creates is eternal. That includes us, His most prized creations. One day our souls will face an eternal judgment. Where will that part of us that cannot be destroyed spend eternity?

Hope you except Christ before your "matter" changes form.

Endora: Science is always contradicting its self, I am so glad that you pointed this out, I wish I could give you a half of a thumbs up, but I went all the way and gave you a whole one this time.You've been on my prayer list for a long time now, I know God could greatly use someone with your talents. Now won't you please come on over to His side?

Sorry your evidently much older than you appeared to be. It will not happen again Ma'm.

Samurai jack,
Our thoughts and emotions are only visible through the animation of our bodies. You can’t see them but they are REAL. In our present state of being this “thought/emotion energy is perfectly suited for the human body. However when the human body can no longer sustain this energy this energy returns to the originator, “God”. God, issues this energy a new body to continue its existence.

34 Become sober-minded as you ought, and stop sinning; for some have no knowledge of God I speak this to your shame.
35But someone will say, "How are the dead raised? And with what kind of body do they come?"
36 You fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies;
37and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else.
38But God gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own.
39All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and another of fish.
40There are also heavenly bodies and earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the earthly is another.
41There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from star in glory.
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead It is sown a perishable body, it is raised an imperishable body;
43it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power;
44it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body.
45So also it is written, "The first MAN, Adam, BECAME A LIVING SOUL " The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
46However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural; then the spiritual.
47The first man is from the earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven.
48As is the earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are those who are heavenly. . _ 1 Corinthians 15 (New American Standard Bible)

Your right, matter either changes into other matter or energy. We have ways to test and dectect both matter and energy. Look at the electromagnetic spectrum. We can't see radio waves or magnatism, but we can test and verify that they exist. Turn on your radio. As of yet, there is no evidence to indicate a spirit exists and there is no testable hypothesis to look for a spirit. Until that time, I am satisfied believing that spirits do not exist.

My mind will always remain open if new evidence comes forth.

The atoms comprising my per dog cannot be created and destroyed ... so why not a soul?. Well, I can prove that my dog exists, but there's no proof of the existence of a 'soul' (please no book quotes, I mean PROOF), let alone that such a thing is composed of atoms. So the question is as irrelevant as asking if Santa Claus is eternal.

I remember when my tenth grade Biology teacher explained this to his class...well, not the part about the spirit being pure energy, but the rest...and it really grabbed ahold of me.
Could have been the fact that I was a young girl with a crush...I mean, the guy was HOT!
But he did make me think.
Anyhow, I would add one small detail. There is an Entity that can both create...and destroy...energy.
Including the spirit.
Remember that He also said:
Eze 18:4 Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.

If the "soul" were made of energy we could see it. If we ever detect "soul energy" then it would be reasonable to assume that the energy MIGHT continue after the bodily death.

interesting question. If it is pure energy as you claim, then why can't we detect it? Why isn't there a bundle of energy associated with each human that science simply can't figure out?

Edit: so, once again, we come back to the "we can't see it, hear it, feel it, or detect it in any way" argument? I'm sorry, that's just not a very compelling argument.
