First of all, think about buying two sets of towels and only using one of them. They get washed over and over again and the color fades. Take out the set you have stored and you will see a big difference.
Same with tattooing...you have exposed a tattoo to the sun for four years and it will not look like the new pristine tattoo. This is when you are talking about black and gray and yes, it could also be a different ink contributing to it. I now have a far darker black that I used to.
Colored tattoos present even more of a problem in that the colors, even if you keep the same manufacturer, changes from batch to batch many times - it is how they get their powders and they don't seem to make adjustments. I don't care what anyone advertises - we use the very best inks on the market and get color shifts with new batches. ( I am personally working on that, though.)

Different tattooist do use different inks but the best thing to probably do if you want them to look the same is to get the old one filled in again as tattoo's do fade after a few years so won't look as fresh as the new one.
Going to the same tattooist will most likely be the best option if you're concerned about their choice in inks.
Once it has healed properly the new tattoo will stay roughly the same colour once the scab has fallen off, there will be a difference in the shades of ink as the older tattoo would have probably faded slightly with age.

Tattoo artists do use different types of ink, however, do you remember how brilliantly vivid your last one was a few years ago when you got it? Isn't like that now, is it? The same will happen to this new one and even if the artist used a different black, you shouldn't be able to tell in a few months. No need to worry. Good luck!

Yes artists use dif. brands of ink, but likely your problem is do to fading. There isn't much you can do about this unless you want to spend the money to have the old one gone over again. Another thing that could cause the variation in color is how deep the artist placed the ink, and how heavy he put it in. The best advice is preventative care. If going in Sunlight or tanning beds, apply chapstick to small tattoos, and a good sunscreen to large ones. Make sure to Apply lotion to your tattoo on a regular basis, This will help in preventing a drastic change in color if you decide to add a new piece of art.

tatoos always look a lot darker when they are just done, as it eals it will fade but you can never guarantee that they'll be exactly the same shade.

yes tattooists do use diff. inks, but the reason the blacks are different is because your other tat is faded, if you want them to be even, you need to get your older one touched up
