All religions have a certain level of absurdity. Christianity has its absurdities, as does Mormonism (itself a sub-sect of Christianity).
But Scientology absolutely takes the cake in absurdities. Keep in mind that Scientology was started by a science fiction writer who wrote that we carry with us the brainwashed souls of ancient aliens that were blown up in a volcano.
Also, it's interesting to point out that South Park devoted entire episodes - and excellent ones, at that - to Mormonism and Scientology.

As a Latter-day Saint, I take offense at you trying to distinguish Mormonism from Christianity.
I don't know much about Scientology so I won't comment on how "weird" or "absurd" it is. I'll let a Scientologist defend it.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints does NOT allow men to have multiple wives. The 1890 Manifesto put an end to all new polygamous relationships.
The Bible tells us that there would be a great apostasy (falling away) before the Lord's Second Coming. In revelation, John the Beloved saw an angel descend from heaven bringing the gospel back to earth. Mormonism believes that this Apostasy did occur and the Priesthood was lost. It took an angel (Moroni) to restore the gospel and the apostles Peter, James, and John had to restore the Priesthood. This is the premise of the very existence of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

First of all, Scientology is a cult, not a religion. The leaders just want to control their members and drain them of all their hard-earned money. You can go here to learn more: http://www.xenu.net/
Second of all, all organized religion has its own little quirks, which a lot of people are not going to agree upon. I consider myself a Christian, but I do not believe that the Bible was written by God (it might have been influenced by Him, but men actually wrote it.) I determine my own morals and what is right and wrong. I believe in being a good person and treating people with kindness (which I admit I don't always do all the time.) I do not believe the same things as some other Christians (like it is a sin to be homosexual or to masturbate.) I tend to find my own truths. I think this is healthier than just doing whatever you are told and following without questioning.

It's all about perspective. (FYI, Mormonism is a type of Christianity as they do believe in Jesus Christ)
To the naive believer ( in whatever) , any belief other than their own is CLEARLY absurd, delusional, and the followers of such beliefs need their heads examined for believing such nutty things. It is so obvious to them.
Christians are atheists about Zeus, Rama, Quetzalcoatl, and any of the other 1000's of gods ever dreamed up by superstitious man. They will use the same arguments against Mormonism or Scientology, that the average atheist uses against Christianity. They just don't see that is what they are doing. That's why it's called BLIND FAITH.
As atheists, we just go one god further. Sigh. (I await the fundies thumbs down)

Ummm...Scientologists don't think all of us get processed on Venus. Nor are corpses "dropped off the coast of California". i'm not asserting there are not unusual ideals in Scn- there are. yet your examples are incorrect. "Processing" is "auditing" this is Scn counselling. it is often executed at a Scientology midsection. Hubbard did make a humorous tale approximately merely approximately getting run over by utilizing a freight practice on Venus- a minimum of I *desire* it fairly is a humorous tale- so in step with danger it is the place you're getting the Venus factor. He grow to be cremated and his ashes scattered interior the sea, yet he's far from the only ineffective guy to be disposed of that way. not all Christians have confidence the earth grow to be created in 7 days. i don't be attentive to that each and all of us Moslems tithe yet while they did, i don't see what's so strange approximately that. There are no religions devoid of strange concepts.

Aloha weemaryanne,
Good question. Mark Twain summed it up best: "The easy confidence with which I know another man's religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also."
I'm forever amused by R&S believers who when I state the inadequacies and illogic of religion - wholeheartedly agree - then proceed to tell me that’s why the Lord Jesus Christ is the light and the way. It’s like uhmm hello? Why is logic and reason acceptable tools to invalidate all religions but yours? The thought doesn’t even dawn on them that if all the other religions are fake, then there’s a good chance theirs is too!
I find every sect, as far as reason will help them, make use of it gladly; and where it fails them, they cry out, it is a matter of faith, and above reason.
— John Locke (1632-1704)
"I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours."
— Stephen Roberts, (1723-1792)
"Theists think all gods but theirs are false. Atheists simply don't make an exception for the last one."
— Unknown
And remember... "Religions are like farts. Yours is good, but everyone else's stinks." (Picket Fences)

Dude I've been saying that for years. All religions are based simply on the wishes of the participants. Don't want to die, believe in a heaven. Want justice to be served in an unjust world, believe in a hell. But in the end all the religions suffer from one fatal flaw. They're not real. Yet because of our deep seated and natural fear of death and the feeling that the people that have wronged us should "get theirs in the end" people allow themselve to be duped by some of the most absurd beliefs. Congrats for not falling into the same fantasies.

They're ALL absurd. Scientology is a cult, Mormonism borders on being a cult but I'm not quite sure that it fully is, and Christianity is just a very popular religion. They're all bizarre.
One has to do with aliens and becoming an all powerful "Thetan".
One has to do with becoming a GOD after death...
One has to do with a god sending a form of himself to earth so that he can be sacrificed to himself in order to save us all from his wrath.
By the way, this is why I don't like Scientology:

I think all religions are equal, just as all people and animals; sexes, races, etc. The only ones that are worse are those that "Judge" or put down others simply because of; orientation, race, gender, religion, etc. The reason why I'm afraid most of the time to tell people what religion I am, is because most people are not open to the idea of reincarnation.
