Do speed work 2 or 3 times a week. This will be repeats of less than a mile or ladders.

Speed work is the answer. Twice a week at a track. Run 1 mile easy warmup, then 10x100 yards, then a cool down mile. I like to run the straights, walk or jog to recover in the turns.

Good LUck

Add some speed workouts into your weekly workout.

My coach told me that it's more beneficial to run a hard mile, take a 2 minute rest, and run another hard mile than to run 2 average miles without stopping.

I'm assuming your run 6 days a week? Make 3 of those days a speed workout (hard mile - rest - another hard mile)

and then make 4 days an endurance workout. (run 5-6 moderate miles straight.)

Good luck!!! :)

Remember that this was Pheidippides third great run in a short space of time. According to legend, when the Persians landed, Pheidippides was sent to Sparta to ask for help. He covered the 150 miles in two days. Presumably he also ran back, in order to be at Marathon to be in a position to carry the news of victory back to the city. Small wonder he was a bit run down by the end.

Mix up your running routine. Do hills, speedwork, tempo runs, long runs, etc. Don't focus just on the 5K. Do some longer runs & races, it'll make the 5K much easier to power all the way through. Good luck!

work on lowering your split times. Weights are not really the answer......but they may help your endurance. I'd also increase your cardio workout program as well. You'll have more left for a kick at the end.

not a necessity, but would be great for stamina and appearance. also just to increase arm movement endurance(deltoid muscle)
