No, it started out evil.
It's just about time we, as a civilization, got past these superstitions and realized the harm that religion does in the world.

America is not the culprit in turning people against religion. People in general are the bad guys here. When one preaches tolerance then goes around spreading intolerance it is hard not to look elsewhere for answers. No that was not a slam on everyone in every religion that was a fact supported by a few or more bad eggs that crop up in every religion.

The best selling books in America are NOT about atheism.
The best seller is the Bible. Each and every year, the best seller is the Bible.
The three best selling novels in America right now are about religion not atheism.

Some of the rightwingnuts have suggested recently that the success of these books is caused partly by believers who buy them in order to "know their enemy." !!!
A book becomes popular because it says something that people want to hear. That's all.

I think people are realising that there are logical answers out there and the demand for that information has lead to an upsurge in those types of books. When is the pursuit of knowledge ever a bad thing?

No, religion was already detrimental all on it's own.
Books on atheism that also discuss organized religion simply remark upon this reality.
