As an atheist I obviously don't believe in God, so the responsibility for prolonged suffering lies not with him, but with the advances in modern medicine and a society that spends too much time trying to be politically correct.
If the ability to cure a person exists, then do it. If that's impossible, then make it legal to painlessly end another's suffering if that is their wish.
None of this removing a feeding tube and allowing a person to suffer extensively for 13 days. That's just too cruel for comfort. We don't do that to our animals, we shouldn't do that to humans.
I truly feel there should be laws allowing euthanasia, as long as it's done humanely and with compassion.

I'll add one more thing.
Proverbs 26:2
"As the bird by wandering,
as the swallow by flying,
so the curse, causeless,
shall not come."
I would say this kind of suffering is a curse, whether it be the sins of the person or inherited sins of ancestors, I do not know, but God says a curse without a cause does not come.
Sin causes disease (curse).
God is blamed for everything, but the truth is . . . God is in heaven on His throne . . . Satan is the god of this world. If you don't believe Satan rules this world take a look at Hollywood.
Watch TV. Play video games. Go to the movies. Drive the streets of the big city at 2:00 a.m. in the morning. Read the questions and answers on YA. Satan is trying hard to shatter the power of the holy people and doing a very good job of it. God doesn't show up until He is invited. God doesn't push himself on people. If we gather together in His name then He will come.

This is a very common question, and a good one at that.
When Adam and Eve sinned, they also rebelled against God's authority over them. When Satan was tempting Eve, he told her "YOUR eyes are bound to be opened and YOU are bound to be like God, KNOWING good and bad."(Gen. 3:5)
So by eating the forbidden fruit, Eve, and then Adam were basically saying 'We don't need God to tell us right from wrong. We can decide for ourselves just as well.'
God could have easily destroyed Adam, Eve and Satan then and there. But all remaining sentient life would have still had the question in their minds: 'Could they have ruled themselves successfully?'
God has allowed these last few thousand years for that question to be answered. The suffering, old age, death, and other horrible things in the world are the result of our attempts to govern ourselves apart from God. If He were to step in and help every suffering person we'd think 'Hey, we can do it ourselves!', which is clearly not true.
The good news is that God will step in soon to remove all wickedness from the earth and fulfill the promise He made at Revelation 21:4: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."
He has also promised to resurrect people back to life and have a chance to serve Him in a paradise. This promise is found at John 5:28, 29: "The hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out..."

God allowed His own Son to suffer a long drawn out death. Isaiah 52:14.......As many were astonished at thee: his visage was so marred (disfigured) more than any man, and his form more than any man.......His face and body was so disfigured by the scourging, that the people were stunned and horrified. And this was before they hung Him on the cross. Be thankful that these people are in a comfortable bed, and are taken well care of, while waiting to be called home, unlike Jesus , who wasn't even offered water, but vinegar when He thirsted.

What if God doesn't have an opinion on this? What if it is left up to each and everyone of us to form our thoughts on this. There is a point to every life and we are making it up as we go. All God desires of us is that we play with each other fairly and if you don't see what you are seeing as fair maybe you are to do something about it. As of yet we usually don't get to see the big picture and as such we don't know why things are the way they are but that is the point of life, to discover and answer these questions for ourselves, with a little help from our friends.

Before a child can be born, the mother must endure great pains of labor. The pain is so intense that a woman may not think she will live through it, but she does. After the baby is born the woman hardly even remembers the excruciating pains she experienced before his birth. Her happiness is greater than even the pains she just experienced. In this same way a person may have to suffer excruciating pains, but when he is revived at the day of Judgment to the mind-boggling Kingdom of God all the pains we endure on this evil earth will be worth it.
I hope this helps you to understand suffering on earth a little bit better.
God Bless You

So what would you suggest as an alternative? As soon as a person develops early cancer, God simply strikes him dead on the spot? We are biological creatures, not just spiritual, and some biological processes take time. This applies both to healing processes and to disease processes. The Church does not require that "extraordinary means" be used to keep a person biologically alive when there is no hope of recovery. If a person decides to forego treatment and die a natural death in such a situation, that is his/her prerogative. But murdering a sick person - or assisting in their suicide - is no more acceptable than murdering anyone else.

Instead of suffering, why doesn't the person just give all pain to God. This takes repentence & praying Gods healing verses. God sent His Word & healed us of all our diseases.
The wages of sin is death, so? We all die & some die with Alzhiemers. And, sometimes this is environmental sins like aluminum cans we drink from. Sometimes it is just not giving our confusion to God. We are suppose to cast all our cares to God. That would be even in the beginning stages of any disease, or even if we are worried about a disease, before we get it.
Also, I do pray (if someone has led a long life) that God heal them or just take them home. But also, that they are right with God before they go. I wouldn't kill anyone or myself. I know Gods ways are above my ways. I would ask God by praying verses or this prayer.

Dad was an alcoholic, would swear & never go to church. My father believed strongly in God because of the miracle of farm crops, births of baby animals, trees, sunrise, etc... He treated each person with respect and fairness. Most local 'church' people saw only the swearing & alcohol not that he was highly respected, fair, honest and well liked plus his opinion was always sought due to his common sense. He was diagnosed with cancer - - fought to survive it for 6 years & took a turn for the worse. During that time, he got in touch with the first minister he liked and actually spoke to him without judging. (Later this minister was kicked out of this town's church because he prayed & talked with 'That 'Sinner')
Lots of pain that morphine wasn't even helping anymore.
* * * * DAD'S REASONING: for not 'bringing him home' :
Sinned but have good heart, you suffer during this painful time to cleanse the soul plus testing the strength in your belief thru this time so you can be guaranteed your spot above.
ALSO: It brought all of his siblings together for a change. Gave family some 'wake up' calls & brought friends & family closer. Dad touched many people during this time frame: medical professionals, friends/family, hospital roommate & visitors, plus this one minister and congregation.
I didn't need mourning time. Dad was prepared & so was I and smile that the blessing of death finally arrived so he and the remaining can rest.
